Just before going on intake hold, we took in this little fighter named Opal. 💔
Opal was found limping and crying out in pain. The finder was someone we had helped in the past and reached out to us for assistance. While we aren’t exactly sure what happened to her, it is evident that she has suffered a serious injury to her left front leg, likely from some type of bite wound.
When Opal arrived, her wound was severely infected and filled with pus. She was covered in fleas and had even developed fly strike around the injury. At approximately 6 weeks old, she should weigh much more than she does—Opal weighs just 0.66 pounds, making her dangerously underweight for her age.
Today, Opal was seen at Ebert Animal Hospital, where her wound was flushed and cleaned. She was started on antibiotics and pain medication to help fight the infection and keep her comfortable. Unfortunately, the veterinarian is concerned that some of the tissue may no longer be viable, and there is a possibility she could lose her leg.
Right now, our focus is getting the infection under control and helping Opal gain strength. We are hopeful that with proper medical care, good nutrition, and lots of love, she will begin to feel much better in the days ahead.
As many of you know, we are currently on intake hold and are struggling to keep up with the medical expenses for the cats and kittens already in our care. Cases like Opal’s are exactly why your support means so much. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us provide lifesaving veterinary care to cats who have nowhere else to turn.
