It's been the kind of week that forces us to be strong when all we want to do is curl up together and cry.

Our chubby Beagle Groot, another unicorn that thrived on meeting and playing with all the other dogs and who had just a great demeanor with people, also went to the Rainbow Bridge with his friend Jack.

We took in Groot at the request of a local vet. He had many medical issues and we knew we would be the final chapter in his story, but he deserved a chance to be the happy, ground sniffing Beagle he was meant to be, for as long as we could keep him comfortable.

He had a medical episode this weekend and discussions between Katie and I and our wonderful vets led us to the decision to let him be at peace.

It's not a goodbye, Groot. It's just an "until we meet again". You were loved wholeheartedly, buddy, and I know your roommate Tyson will miss you just as much as everyone else at Silver Fur.

Six and a half years.

Six and a half years of love. Six and a half years of friends, roommates, fun, adventures, comfort and full tummies.

Six and a half years of waiting. Waiting for a forever home that never came. While we will forever be grateful for the time we had with Jack and the love shared, we feel like we failed him. We never found him a family of his own, so the Silver Fur Pack became the family he needed.

With heavy hearts we helped es**rt Jack to the Rainbow Bridge. His mind and heart were still youthful after 16 years, but his body had no more to give. He lost the use of his back legs and although we were happy to put a diaper on him or to wrap a lifting sling around him to help him go outside when he had bad days, its no way for a proud dog to live, so we made the decision to let him cross with dignity.

Jack was the current longest resident at Silver Fur, coming to us in 2020 from Long Island, New York. He was amazing. Over the course of his years with us he had over 10 roommates that he helped acclimate to their new lives at the rescue, he was fostered out to a gentleman with end stage cancer and spent that time giving love and encouragement to him while he fought his own battles, and the family gave credit to Jack for the extended time he had, saying his love and caring for Jack gave him purpose and strength to carry on.

He was a special boy, a rescue unicorn that loved both humans and other dogs. We love you Jack Daniels, Jackie Boy, Jack-Jack, and will miss you. It feels so different in the rescue now without you. You were a fixture out there, an anchor that kept us steady through our ups and downs and the memory of your handsome frosted face will live with us forever.

We'll see you again someday. Rest well, friend.

Scarlett came to us January 12th after living alone in the woods for at least 3 weeks during the cold winter. She was rescued and put in our care. 6 months later and we have a healthy 2 yr old boxer/Retriever mix ready for adoption. We got her back to a good weight, spayed and had bloodwork which came back great. Dewormed and UTD on vaccinations. She would make someone a good companion.
