The ruling means that the VA must build more than 2,500 permanent and temporary supportive housing units on its 388-acre campus.

On this day in history, 9 September 1945, Japan surrenders Korea to the Allies at Seoul. The Japanese Empire established itself on the world stage with the defeat of the Russians in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The resulting Treaty of Portsmouth gave Japan control of several territories, including Korea. Japan signed the Japan-Korea Treaty in 1910 and annexed Korea, then began supplanting Korean history and culture with its own. By the time they surrendered Korea in 1945, the Japanese had occupied it for over 35 years. After the surrender ceremony in Seoul, the Soviet Union and the U.S. split the oversight of removing Japanese troops from Korea, with the Soviets in the northern part of the country and the Americans in the south, split along the 38th parallel. Both parts of the country set up their own governments with backing from the overseeing nation, setting the political scene for later conflict.
