Today's safety tip is on the Rule of 3s.

If you are truly stuck in an emergency situation, this is a good guideline to prioritize needs. Tunnel vision can easily set in, and someone in an emergency situation can get stuck on a very specific task that may not be as beneficial in their long term survival.

You won't necessarily need this if you are in the Greater Austin area and you planned properly, but if you go out and explore around Texas, the country, or the world, this rule can help you while awaiting rescue.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

On this day of thanks, we would like to thank all of our members who volunteer their time and energy so we may serve the community, to our volunteer victims who come out to trainings allowing us to better practice our skills, and to the community for supporting us.

Our latest safety tip is about what to do if you get lost.

Not everyone who is lost needs a search and rescue team. Sometimes you might be able to backtrack your way out. Sometimes you might hear a roadway, which means you are near "civilization". Maybe you have a map and compass, and you remember how to use them, and you can plan your way out.

It is better to call for help and get the processes started, even if you cancel help before it arrives, than to wait to eventually call for help. Getting a search started takes some time (you have to call for help, the correct help has to be contacted, the help has to mobilize personnel, and the personnel need to get on scene). The sooner this all starts, the sooner you get home. If you are able to self-rescue, do so, and cancel the help.

Our searchers periodically refresh their map and compass navigation skills as there are times that our GPS's (really our phones using GPS software) may not be useable.

We do recognize that today is National Cat Day, but despite some of our member's best efforts, we have not been able to develop SAR Kit-10s yet.

We hope these SAR K9s bring a smile to your face while we continue our SAR Kit-10 efforts.

October 28 is National First Responders Day! First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators. In an emergency, they're the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line. Today, we recognize the members of Texas A&M Task Force 1 (TX-TF1); Texas Task Force 2 (TXTF2) and Texas Task Force 3 (TX-TF3) and we pay tribute to their endless hours and around the clock service provided to their communities and the Great State of Texas!
