Texas heat is no joke and it can sneak up fast on the trail. Whether you’re hiking, running, or biking the Violet Crown Trail, here are a few simple ways to stay safe and enjoy every mile:

⏰Start early or go late – Aim for morning or evening outings to avoid peak heat.
💧Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – Bring more water than you think you'll need and start hydrating the night before your hike. Drink 16 ounces of water for every hour you spend in the heat.
👒Dress smart – Wear light, breathable clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. Apply sunscreen liberally and frequently.
🌳Take breaks in the shade – The VCT has plenty of tree-covered spots to cool down and designated seating areas. Aim to take breaks and rehydrate every 15 minutes or so during peak heat.
🧑‍🤝‍🧑Let someone know – Stick to the buddy system and hike the trail with a friend. If you go alone, always tell a friend your route and make sure your phone is charged!
🐾Paws get hot too – Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t hold it there comfortably for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Bring water for both you and your pup.

And remember: If you’re feeling dizzy, overly fatigued, or disoriented, it’s time to stop, rest, and rehydrate. The trail will always be there tomorrow.

Stay safe, stay cool, and keep enjoying the incredible green spaces we all work hard to protect!

During a recent site visit at Pecan Springs Karst Preserve, Conservation Science Specialist James Hall made an exciting discovery—a pair of fledgling Black vultures tucked inside an old hunting blind.

Unlike many birds, vultures don’t build traditional nests. Instead, they lay their eggs directly on the ground in sheltered spaces like caves, dense thickets, hollow logs, and abandoned structures like this one.

While vultures are often overlooked, they play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by helping clean up carrion and prevent the spread of disease. Nature’s cleanup crew at work!

Rain couldn’t stop It’s My Park Day presented by Austin Parks Foundation! We had a fantastic time helping Hill Country Conservancy create “brush barriers” between the Violet Crown Trail and the Veloway, which are intended to deter pedestrians from crossing over onto the Veloway. We were lead by Tim Eischen of Eischen General Contracting who did an outstanding job bringing this section of the VCT to life. We want to thank all the volunteers who showed up, and our friends at Donut Tacos Palace for providing breakfast! Shout out to board members Charlie Riou, Brooks Lawson, and Dale Daugherty for representing the club!

Be sure to join us next weekend on November 9th for Hill Country Conservancy’s grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for this newest section of the Violet Crown Trail! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/celebrate-the-completion-of-violet-crown-trail-phase-i-tickets-966677447267

We're buzzing with excitement for !

Bees play a vital role in our ecosystem. They are essential pollinators, and we rely on them to ensure the growth of our crops, flowers, and plants. However, we have seen a concerning decline in bee populations over the years. Bees face many challenges, including habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and diseases. Their decline threatens not just the bees themselves but also our entire ecosystem.

Here are some simple steps you can take to support our buzzing friends:
-Plant bee-friendly flowers and plants in your garden or balcony.
-Avoid using types of pesticides that can harm bees and other beneficial insects.
-Spread the word about the importance of bees.
-Support local beekeepers and purchase their honey or beeswax products.
-Get involved with conservation organizations like Hill Country Conservancy to protect bee habitats and promote sustainable land practices.

Every small action can make a big difference in preserving our planet's biodiversity. Let's BEE the change we wish to see!

Last Friday’s Violet Crown Trail cleanup at the 209 Trailhead was a great reminder that every cleanup makes a difference. While there wasn’t a huge amount of trash to collect, our volunteers still removed 22 pounds of litter and enjoyed a beautiful morning hiking together along the trail.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to help care for the Violet Crown Trail and keep these green spaces welcoming for all.

If you missed this cleanup, join us for our next VCT cleanup on Friday, June 19, at the Spyglass Trailhead!
