Pragathi was founded in 2004 by a group of nine professionals in Austin with roots to Karnataka, India. Each one of the founders had his/her own experiences that brought them together to make a difference to thousands of children in India. It was not an obligation; it was not sympathy or guilt; it was not compulsion, but a sense of duty to where we come from. It is also recognition that so much ta

lent goes undetected and unknown and we individuals have the power to recognize and nurture those talents and make those young minds the most productive citizens. Pragathi was an outcome of a dream and belief that we can collectively make a huge difference. Pragathi works with local school authorities, teachers, parents, and the community in many different parts of Karnataka. Since inception Pragathi has been able to help nearly 45,000 children become more literate and have a better chance of lifting themselves and their families out of stifling poverty. Pragathi has reached government school children in various parts of Karnataka including villages around Mysore, Chamaraja Nagara, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Channa Patna, Tumkur, Hubli, Dharwad, Bangalore as well as the cities themselves. Problems in primary education stem from various causes including low parent involvement, shortage of teachers, poor curriculum and poor training of teachers, lack of accountability and monitoring of teaching staff and other societal issues. An important goal of Pragathi is to combat these problems to create better learning environments in India. Pragathi works with many different organizations to better the Indian school system, especially in impoverished cities and villages.
