The inaugural ceremony was held on November 21, 2016 at 2:0

A vision and explanation of the memorial was given by ceremony host John Paul Dineen, III, comments from Texas Agriculture Commisioner Sid Miller, State Representative John Wray and Texas Farm Bureau President, Russell Boening, were given to the the families of the 2016 honorees. They were also awarded certificates signed by Governor Abbott. The Texas Agriculture Memorial Day began as a vision of one Texas farmer, John Paul Dineen, III and soon became a partnership between Texas Governor Abbott, Texas Department of Agriculture Commisioner Sid Miller. The purpose of the memorial is to honor lives lost and sacrifices made in the pursuit of raising food and fiber for all Texans. Each year there will be a nomination and application process to add names of honorees to the memorial, there are three categories of honorees available. (Please see listing and guidelines below)
In the future there will be an interactive memorial kiosk located in the Agricultural Museum in the Texas State Capital. From the kiosk visitors will be able to search for honorees and read about their contributions to Texas Agriculture as well as nominate someone they feel should be included in the memorial. The kiosk will have links to safety education information and accident prevention provided by The Southwest Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention, and Education located at the University of Texas in Tyler, also one of our project partners. We will be seeking additional partners in funding the memorial kiosk and website, please contact Texas Farm Bureau for more information

Joe Bob Boyd loved dirt.
Tonight I would like to share about Texas Agriculture Memorial Day, “Life of Service” honoree Joe Bob Boyd. Thank you Governor Greg Abbott and Texas State Representative Cody Harris for helping us honor his life. Thank you Texas State Representative DeWayne Burns for assisting and Rachel Hargrove for the pictures.

Mr. Boyd grew up on learning how to farm everything possible, but his main crop was peanuts. Peanut farming runs generations deep for this sandy loam Hill County boy. Peanuts, watermelons, cantaloupe, black-eyed peas, hogs, pigs, cattle, chicken, beloved dogs and cats - Joe Bob loved the land, and being a farmer and rancher was as thick in his blood as the sand in his boots. Using a "good year" in 1986 for peanuts, he was able to start a small church and was a pastor at Bethel Bible Church for 33 years. Joe Bob Boyd's contribution to the farming community will forever be felt and missed in Hill County, Texas.

This morning I would like to share about Texas Agriculture Memorial Day,“Life of Service” honoree Edward Braxton Shaver Sr. Thank you Governor Greg Abbott and Texas State Representative James Frank for helping us honor him. Thank you Rachel Hargrove for the pictures.

Mr. Shaver spent his life in agricultural pursuit, 1905-1962. He rented and owned farms in Central and North Central Texas. He raised cotton, maize, and wheat in Williamson, Haskell and Knox Counties. He was a cotton gin owner from 1921-36 in Knox City, TX. While in the pursuit of operating his Gin, the Shaver Gin of Knox City TX. in 1927, he caught his hand in a cotton stand belt and pulley. It cut off two of his fingers and mangled the rest of the hand. After healing up, he continued to operate the Gin until it was destroyed by fire in the Winter of 1936. He continued to farm his land in Haskell Co. and rental land in Knox Co. until his death in 1962.

This evening I would like to share about Texas Agriculture Memorial Day, honoree Jake Wallace Toler, he was 24 years young. Thank you Governor Greg Abbott and Texas State Representative David Spiller for helping us honor him. Thank you Rachel Hargrove for the pictures.
Jake loved farming and ranching, he also loved being a part of his small community and the rural way of life. He thoroughly enjoyed anything that had to do with farm equipment, antique tractors, cattle, hunting, fishing or basically anything outdoors. From a young age Jake could operate a truck or tractor and spent his days helping his dad work on equipment, tending to cattle, baling hay or plowing and sprigging: Jake graduated from high school in 2014 from Forestburg ISD, in a class of twelve close friends. He was actively involved in both 4-H and FFA, held an officer position from 3rd grade through his senior year and received many awards and scholarships along the way. After high school Jake went to college full-time, worked at Tony's Seed & Feed in Muenster, as well as working alongside his dad. In 2017 he earned his Farm and Ranch Management Degree from North Central Texas College in Gainesville. Jake was an extremely hard worker! Upon his passing, he was employed at Peterbilt in Denton and also owned his own land and equipment. When he wasn't working a full-time job, he baled hay for himself as well as for others along with plowing and sprigging. He also took pride in raising his herd of registered Simmental cattle and collecting antique tractors. Jake was a man of few words, unless you got him talking about tractors, hay or cattle. He was an excellent steward of the land and of livestock, and absolutely an asset to Texas agriculture. Jake will be greatly missed by his family and all those who loved him.

Today I want to share about Texas Agriculture Memorial Day, honoree Tim O'Connor, from Hill County. Thank you Governor Greg Abbott and Texas State Representative Cody Harris for helping us honor his life. Thank you Texas State Representative DeWayne Burns for assisting and Rachel Hargrove for the pictures.

Tim was the answer to every problem we had on the farm.
He wasn't just our mechanic, he was fellow farmers mechanic as well. There wasn't a piece of equipment he couldn't fix. He was a hard headed, big hearted, but the meanest nice person you'd ever meet. His smile and laugh was contagious. We have been lost without him. He was a friend, a mechanic, a truck driver, and lastly, an employee we will never replace. He loved being on our farm, he loved fixing our problems and he died doing what he loved, driving a truck full of soybeans to the elevator.

Today I would like to share about 10 year old
Texas Agriculture Memorial Day, honoree Legend Kell Williamson who lost his life in a horseback riding accident. Thank you Governor Greg Abbott and Texas State Representative Trent Ashby for helping us honor this young Texan. Thank you Rachel Hargrove for the pictures.

Legend was a friend to everyone, to know him was to love him. His contagious smile, a firm handshake, and a good "yes sir" was enough to melt anyone's heart and gain their respect. He loved his country and thanked a veteran every chance he got. His passion was rodeo and team roping and he enjoyed being with his friends. He was active in his dad's hay and team roping business. Legend loved the Lord and was on a mission to lead as many people to Christ as possible. He lived every day by Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself» NIV
