We’re absolutely loving this October 1991 throwback to the neighborhood alley cleanups led by the Youth Crew (aka The Guad Squad) of the Guadalupe Association for an Improved Neighborhood. GAIN began in 1991 with six Guadalupe neighborhood residents who had ideas for projects that they hoped the City of Austin would fund. Throughout the 1990s, GAIN provided households with free outdoor lighting and smoke detectors, organized graffiti and litter cleanups, and advocated for affordable home ownership opportunities in East Austin. Shoutout to our neighborhood association, still going strong 30 years later!

Johnny Limon Village coming soon!

In the late 1970s, the City of Austin proposed to bulldoze 11 homes in the area around the French Legation for a new city park. The Guadalupe Neighborhood Area Association (GNAA) was formed to fight French Legation Park, and neighborhood efforts defeated the plan.

In the present-day, we’ve partnered with our neighbors at the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation to share the stories of the working-class residents who organized to fight displacement and preserve the fabric of East Austin for decades to come. Stay tuned for our weekly series on the French Legation Park protests and the rise of the Guadalupe Neighborhood Area Association ✊🏾

Hi Everyone on Facebook,

I’ve spent over 25 years of my life working with the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation (GNDC) and my passion for the work we do has never been stronger. The need for affordable housing in Austin has never been greater. This is especially true for families and individuals with generation ties to Austin who are confronted with fewer and fewer options for housing that allows them to remain in the city and neighborhood they love.

I’ve probably never asked you to donate to GNDC and, to be honest, fundraising is not something that GNDC does well. BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT! This event puts FUN in FUNdraising. That’s because, while we sure would like everyone to donate a few thousand dollars, in this competition, just $5 or $25 would be wonderful. If GNDC can get 500 donations – meaning if 500 people donate to GNDC-- between now and 11am, Monday August 9th —then we have an excellent chance of winning a prize of $5,000. That’s right, if you donate $5 (or more) then you help GNDC win $5,000. Fun and easy, right?

And, please, SPREAD THE WORD and ask people you know to make even a small donation to GNDC as part of this Community Thrives event.

Many Thanks!
Mark
