On August 6, 2011, a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter—call sign Extortion 17—was shot down in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, while carrying a quick reaction force to support an engaged Army Ranger unit. All 38 aboard were lost, including 17 U.S. Navy SEALs.
It was the deadliest single incident for American forces in the Afghanistan campaign and a driving force behind the creation of the SEAL Legacy Foundation, dedicated to supporting the families of the fallen.
Today, we honor the service, memory, and LEGACY of the brave men who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
