“K*TX Program Director Matt Reilly says the campus' ongoing closure delayed discussions. The 42-year-old Cactus closed last March because of COVID-19, but due to its unique status within the collegiate system, where it operates as a nonprofit, the venue couldn't apply for local or federal relief. Despite UT's announcement that students will return to campus in the fall, plans for spaces like the Cactus remain murky.”

We have been mostly in “suspended animation” for the past several years, but we thought we should unsuspend ourselves for a moment to let you know about “Cactus Burning: Austin, Texas and the Battle for the Iconic Cactus Cafe”, by Michael F. Scully.
“I hope readers of ‘Cactus Burning’ realize that people can fight city hall and sometimes win,” says Scully. “I also hope these events are a lesson in nurturing what’s important to us, and in pushing our governing institutions to do the same.”
Scully is also the author of “The Never-Ending Revival: Rounder Records and the Folk Alliance” (2008).
