The most chilling thing this October? Not knowing what’s on your ballot!

Join us Saturday, October 17 for a family-friendly day focused on making voting information accessible, building community, and helping people feel prepared for the polls.

Activities throughout the day:

🗳️ Election Protection - Info on protecting your rights and help with voting issues

🚗 Make Your Vote Plan and sign up for a ride to the polls

👋 Sign up to work the polls for the county

💆 Spooky, election-themed palm readings and a raffle to support the work behind the event

☕ Food and beverage station with info on the ongoing boycott of Starbucks that Hands Off Central TX has endorsed

📜 The Giant Constitution and other interactive civic activities

🎧 DJ keeping the day moving

⚰️ The Democracy Graveyard, an art exhibit that symbolizes voting faux paux that we’re leaving behind

📸 Spooky photo booth

💀 Día de los Mu***os ofrenda honoring voting heroes that have passed

👑 Drag Queen Story Hours — drag performers read books about Halloween and voting

📱Relational Organizing Training — learn to connect with friends, family, and networks to get them to the polls

🩹 Information and resources on Harm Reduction at the Polls

🎤 Singing greeters welcoming you as you arrive

This is a nonpartisan event. There will be no candidate endorsements or campaign activities. The focus is on community, voter education, and making sure people have access to the information and resources they need for the upcoming election.

Bring your friends, family, and neighbors. Come for the activities, stay for the community, and get connected with people working to make civic participation more accessible for everyone.

All ages are welcome and costumes are encouraged!

Harm reduction gets called a “new” public health movement, but its heart isn’t new at all. 💜

Dignity. Belonging. Meeting people where they are. Honoring each person’s right to choose their own path. Native nations have been caring for their communities this way for generations.

We are honored to have our reentry team lead, Sommer Alexander, will be speaking at the Scaling Safety Symposium: The Blueprint for a Safer Austin, October 14–15, 2026!

Our reentry team is looking forward to learning from Austin’s community leaders and residents and sharing a conversation about preventing violence, supporting local leadership, and getting resources to the people doing this work every day.

Austin has strengths we can build on and people whose work deserves our support. We are grateful that Sommer will be part of this gathering.

Austin, we hope you are all out there enjoying weekend 2 of ACL and all the musical events that have been happening around town. We want everyone to have fun and make it home safe!

🚨 Reminder: the drug supply is unpredictable and dangerous. Toxic substances are showing up where they are not expected.
Carry Naloxone!

❤️ Never use alone.
❤️ Go slow.
❤️ Look out for each other.

This weekend THRA distributed over 200 doses of naloxone up and down 6th street. If you have some, carry it with you. It will reverse opioid overdoses. It won't hurt, it can only help someone experiencing an overdose.

🧠 Know the signs:
Unresponsive, slow or no breathing, blue or gray lips and fingertips.

What to do:
1. Spray one dose of naloxone in nostril. Call 911
2. Give rescue breaths.
3. No response in 2 minutes, give another dose of naloxone and continue rescue breaths until help shows up.

This is where we are reaching out to those who believe in this work as much as we do. Our reliance on grant funding and municipal contracts leaves us vulnerable to the shifts in lobbying, federal, and private sector pressures to divest from people centered social service interventions. Harm reduction works. Period. We choose to see the humanity in everyone we support, listen to, de-escalate, hold space for, and help navigate their circumstances. With the funds we anticipate raising through our Resiliency Campaign, we’ll ensure to continue saving lives, educating our community, and continuing to dismantle a system that sees substance use as a moral failing through decades of stigma driven criminalization.

Yesterday, we asked the people at our drop-in one simple question: "What words would you use to describe THRA?"

We didn't tell them what to say. We just asked what words come to mind when they think of this place.

Here's what they told us:

Nonjudgmental.
Loving.
Hopeful.
Awesome.
Saving lives.
Reducing deaths.
Caring.
A safe place.
Good listeners.
Real.
Accepting.
Inspiring the now.
Loyalty.

These words come straight from the people we serve. These are the only reviews that have ever mattered to us.

Harm reduction isn't just a program or a policy; it's showing up, every day, for people other places have given up on. We meet people exactly where they are and tell them the truth: you matter, you're not alone, and you don't have to earn your dignity back. You already own it.

This is why we do this work. This is who we are because of the people we serve.
