Note from Pastor Shawโข It is with a heaviness of heart, but also with hope in God, that I write to you. The events in our nation are troubling, and yet again we are called to prayer and reflection. New Life Austin is a diverse church in a diverse city. As such, we appreciate the value of all human beings. We also see and experience the painful reality that, even in our diversity, we sometimes experience the disparagement or mistreatment of people based on their race or standing in society. Accordingly, we must stand strong against racism, bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination, and frequently be reminded of the intrinsic value of every human being and the sinfulness of failing to do so.
Here are some practical ways each of us can ensure New Life Austin continues to make progress in this critical matter:
โข Recognize that all humans are created in the image of God. To disparage one is to disparage all and ultimately to rebel against God.
โข We must love all people. However, special attention must be given to protect the vulnerable, underprivileged, and those without power.
โข We should value the uniqueness of each community and avoid stereotypes of entire groups of people.
โข Refuse to allow group stereotypes to distort your view of individuals. Interact with everyone as a human being.
โข Place Scripture above politics and culture. We must love one another, and biblical love is treating our fellow humans in the ways listed in 1 Corinthians 13.
โข Seek to understand rather than to be understood. โข Search your own heart in prayer. Ask God to reveal any biases or prejudices you may be unaware of.
โข Look for common ground with those with whom you disagree. It is okay to disagree politically, but we must agree on matters of equal justice, equal value, and the fair treatment of all people.
โข Be the church. Live a life that reflects biblical principles. Make a difference in your everyday life with the individuals with whom you interact. Choose to make a difference where you live. You can do this by showing kindness and love, but you can also do this by calling out racism when you see it.
We are to be light in the darkness. We can make a difference.
