First off, the Angler of the Year for 2023 is Roy Aleman. Won 5 tournaments in 2023 and 3rd place in 3 other tournaments. This was a close race again, narrowly edging out Tim Champlin by 5 points.

The club met on Jan 9th at the Anchor Bar and established these new objectives / guidelines for 2024.
January's tournament will be held on Lake Bastrop, January 28, 7am to 3pm and weigh-in at the South Shore boat ramp. This will be a paper tournament where all fish caught will be measured and tabulated via the paper weight guidelines. Any fish over 21 inches should be brought to the weigh in.

• The River City Bass Club is a social organization, focused on friendship and fishing.
• The club will meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month at The Anchor Bar in La Frontera shopping center.
• There are no dues to participate in the club.
• All club expenses (web site, TABC membership, etc.) have been terminated to eliminate the expense since the club no longer has any income.
• Tournaments are scheduled for each month, with a $30 entry fee for each tournament. There will be 100% payout of all entry fees collected.
• The payout will be for Heavy Stringer, Big Bass and Team 1st and 2nd places. If ten teams or over, there will be a 3rd place paid out.
• The $30 entry fee will be broken out to $5 for Heavy Stringer, $5 for Big Bass, $20 paid to the Team Places pool (60% to 1st place, 40% to 2nd place; if over ten teams, payout is 1st place - 50%, 2nd place - 30%, 3rd place - 20%).
• Anyone can participate in the monthly tournaments. However, the tournament director must be notified prior to the start of the tournament.
• The tournament results will be posted, and prizes paid out at the next club meeting. They will not be paid out at the tournament site.
• Membership of the club will still be tracked, and points awarded for each tournament and meetings attended as we've done in the past.
• If a person wants to fish a single tournament, they do not have to join the club. They will receive the payout as described, but their monthly points will not be tabulated.
• The club still has money in the treasury from 2023 and previous years. There was discussion about how to use the money for the members. This discussion will continue in 2024. Some examples are; hold a tournament for the members with big payouts; payout Angler of the Year as in the past; hold an event for the members. If you have suggestions, please join the club and participate in the discussion.

River City Bass Club is a group of anglers with a common interest; that is to catch bass. RCBC is low pressure with just a few dollars on the line to make things interesting. When club entry fees are keep low, anglers are more likely to share how they discovered the winning pattern. If the winning purse is worth to much, it’s natural for angles to get tight lipped and the sharing stops. With set schedules, a basic set of rules and camaraderie, RCBC is the perfect environment to learn and get your feet wet and still have the thrill of bass fishing competition.

With the cold winter temps setting in across the south, it’s the perfect time to get out and catch some fish cranking. Listed below are a few of my cold water favorites!

(From least aggressive action to most aggressive action)

1. Shadrap #5 in “crawdad” color

Anytime the water is below 50, this is one of the best cold water crankbaits because of the subtle action and small profile

2. Rapala OG Tiny 4 “shad” color

A new favorite of mine, this little guy is a killer in many situations but excels in cold water conditions cause of its tight wobble.

3. Lure Jensen Speed Trap “Wedgy” color

This bait has been around a while but it is still a go-to in my box. It has a moderate action and excels in dirty water and grass due to its loud rattle.

4. Rapala Dt-8 “Red Crawdad” color

It’s younger brother the DT-6 has been known as one of the best cold water crankbaits on the market. The DT-8 gives the ability to take that profile and action just a little bit deeper to target those fish that are setting up further off the bank.

5. 13 Fishing Jabber Jaw Deep “Diamond Craw” color

This bait has a slightly more aggressive action which can often time trigger fish into biting when they don’t want to! What sets it apart is the larger bill that makes it one of the best crankbaits for deflecting off cover.

6. Storm Wiggle Wart Deep “Phantom Green” color

This new “deep” version of an old time classic catches them anywhere and anytime. It excels best on highland reservoirs when the fish start feeding heavily on crawfish. The new deep version allows the bait to get down to 14ft!
