There are a lot of ways to support a nonprofit. This one costs absolutely nothing.

We’re kicking off an October membership drive for the Long Covid Collective, and we’d love to have you join us.

Why does it matter?

When we apply for funding and seek support for the work we want to do, numbers matter. Being able to say that hundreds of people have chosen to become members of LCC helps demonstrate that there is a real community behind this organization and a real need for the work we’re trying to build.

And becoming a member is about as low-effort as we can make it. It’s free.

You don’t have to attend meetings. You don’t have to volunteer. There are no obligations. And we’re not going to reward your kindness by inundating you with emails. 😂

You’re simply raising your hand and saying, “Count me in.”

If LCC has helped you feel less alone, taught you something, made you feel understood, helped someone you care about, or you simply believe people with Long Covid deserve more support, becoming a member is one small way to help us keep building. 💚

IF YOU’RE ALREADY A MEMBER

We’ve recently switched to a new membership system, so we’re asking everyone, including our existing members, to please fill out the new form.

We know you’ve already signed up once, and we really appreciate you taking a moment to do it again. Thank you for helping us make this transition! 💙💚💙 Note that it will not ask for your name in the beginning if you are already a member.

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences. I’m reading every one of them.

If you’re comfortable, could you include a little context with your comment? For example, was it something said by a doctor, friend, family member, employer, or someone else?

And sometimes the circumstances make the words even more powerful. Being told to “just go for a walk” is one thing. Being told that immediately after struggling to walk is another.

You don’t need to share anything you’re uncomfortable with. I’m just hoping to capture not only what was said, but a little of the circumstances surrounding it, because those details can make an enormous difference in helping others understand why these comments are so hurtful. Many of you are already doing this. 💙💚💙

I’m working on a project about the disconnect between what people living with chronic illness experience and what others assume about us and say to us.

I’d love to include some of the things you’ve actually been told. They can be ridiculous, dismissive, hurtful, or just plain unbelievable.

Please share them in the comments. I won’t use anyone’s name. 💚

We often talk about the need for better treatments and eventually cures. Of course we need those things. But people living with disabling chronic illnesses also need help right now, and far too often, that help simply isn’t available.

There are people who have exhausted their savings, lost their insurance, waited years for disability benefits, and become dependent on family members who may be struggling themselves. Others have no one to depend on at all.

We can tell people they deserve care, security, and dignity, and they absolutely do. But those words don’t pay the rent, put food on the table, or provide someone to help with the most basic tasks of daily living.

Until meaningful support exists, this fear isn’t going away. And we shouldn’t expect people to feel reassured by promises that the systems around them cannot keep.

This is what it means to be disabled in a world that isn’t prepared to take care of disabled people.

Acceptance doesn’t mean we have to like it. We can learn to live within our limitations, make adjustments, find joy where we can, and still wish with every fiber of our being that things were different.

Both can be true. 💙
