In recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re celebrating the importance of designing with accessibility in mind from the very beginning.

Last week, we visited the ACC Rio Grande Campus to hear presentations from UX students who partnered with Austin Lighthouse on redesign concepts for our homepage and donor page.

Throughout the project, students explored what it really means to design with accessibility in mind — not just as a checklist item, but as part of creating better experiences for everyone.

“When you design for accessibility, you truly design for all users. Accessibility should be at the heart of every design, because all users only stand to gain from a design that is more accessible.” – Austin Garrett

Thank you to these talented students and Austin Community College for your creativity, collaboration, and thoughtful work. We’re excited about what’s ahead.

Celebrating in STRIDE : Inclusive Diabetes Education at Austin Lighthouse

At Austin Lighthouse, employee wellness means building programs that are practical, accessible, and designed around real outcomes for our team.

Over the past seven months, we partnered with medical student facilitators from Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin to bring our employees:

✔️ 7 diabetes education classes
✔️ 5 support group sessions
✔️ 12 total sessions
✔️ 30+ participants per class and 56 in total

The series was created specifically for adults who are blind or have low vision, featuring audio materials, large-print resources, hands-on demonstrations, bilingual instruction in English and Spanish, and monthly recurring sessions.

The results spoke for themselves where employees reported stronger confidence in managing their health and making lifestyle changes that fit their lives.

The program was also recognized beyond our walls, earning finalist honors at the American College of Physicians conference and the Annual Interprofessional Health Showcase.

A heartfelt thank you to our Dell Medical School partners both the student facilitators and faculty advisor whose preparation and care made this possible. And most of all, thank you to our Austin Lighthouse employees who showed up, shared their stories, and made this program meaningful.

We can’t wait to welcome new participants next school year as we keep building wellness programs that support our employees, their families, and our community.

Taking care of our health—together. 💙

Our annual Employee Health Fairs in Austin and Taylor gave employees the opportunity to focus on well-being, with resources ranging from financial planning and mental health to fitness and nutrition.

Thank you to all of the employees who stopped by, connected with resources, and took time to invest in your health. We also appreciate the vendors and community partners who supported both events and helped make the health fairs a success.

HapWare’s Chief Scientist, Gabby Pangelinan, visited the Lighthouse this week to demo their innovative device, ALEYE.

ALEYE translates nonverbal communication—like facial expressions, gestures, and body language—into real-time haptic feedback, opening new ways for people who are blind, low vision, deafblind, or neurodiverse to connect and communicate.

Thank you, Gabby, for sharing this powerful technology with our team! 💙

Our Blind Life employee group recently toured the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center, a residential training facility that empowers adults who are blind to live independently and pursue their goals. From career readiness and independent living skills to support for college and trade school, CCRC provides life-changing training that opens doors to opportunity.

Blind Life—our employee-led group focused on connection,
empowerment, and shared experiences among blind and visually impaired team members—was excited to learn more about the journey many take before entering the workforce.
