Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Visit us at: www.dkrfund.org Coach Royal's greatest opponent, however, was Alzheimer's Disease.

Founded in 2012, The Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Disease represents a commitment to excellence in research and care for Texans and a commitment to cure Alzheimer's Disease in our lifetimes. The Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Disease, established in 2012, is the legacy of former University of Texas football coach Darrell K Royal. During his legendary career, Coach R

oyal was responsible for leading the Longhorns to three national titles and an overall record of 167-47-5. By establishing the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Disease to fund critical and collaborative research that will bring about medical breakthroughs in the treatment and cure of AD, he hoped that his notoriety would be a game-changer in the lives of all Texans. In pursuit of our mission to establish Texas as a global research leader in AD and related dementias, including those that are the outcome of traumatic brain injury, the Darrell K Royal Fund solicits and funds collaborative research projects. The DKR Fund honors not only a revered football legend, but also the man that wanted to do all he can to eradicate this terrible disease once and for all.

Alzheimer’s disease affects hundreds of thousands of Texans, and its impact extends far beyond those living with the disease.

Today, an estimated 459,300 Texans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s, while 1,287,000 family members and friends provide care and support. Together, these caregivers contribute 1.9 billion hours of unpaid care each year.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Alzheimer’s Texas is here to support Texans living with Alzheimer’s and related diseases and the caregivers who care for them through education, resources, and support programs across the state.

New research from Baylor College of Medicine is shedding light on how the brain may have a built-in ability to help protect itself from Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists found that increasing a protein called Sox9 may enhance the activity of astrocytes: star-shaped support cells in the brain responsible for maintaining brain health and clearing waste.

Rather than focusing solely on preventing plaque formation, this research suggests a different approach: strengthening the brain’s own support system to help remove existing damage.

While these findings are still in early stages and limited to animal models, they add to growing research exploring how the brain’s immune and support cells may play a role in future Alzheimer’s treatments.

At Alzheimer’s Texas, we remain committed to sharing emerging research and advancing awareness around the science shaping tomorrow’s care.

There is comfort in connecting with people who understand the caregiving journey.

Join Alzheimer’s Texas for our next Caregiver Conversations, a virtual space where dementia caregivers can come together for honest conversation, shared support, and practical guidance.

Led by clinical social worker Joan Asseff, LCSW-S, each session creates space to discuss real-life challenges, exchange strategies, and connect with others who understand what caregiving truly looks like.

Whether you are looking for guidance, support, or simply a space to listen, this community is here for you. Sign up through the link in our bio.

A promising breakthrough from is bringing new momentum to the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Researchers have developed an innovative nasal spray designed to target harmful tau protein buildup, a key driver of cognitive decline. By delivering therapeutic antibodies directly to the brain, this non-invasive approach may help improve cognitive function while overcoming traditional treatment barriers.

While still in early stages, the findings signal meaningful progress toward more effective treatments.
