Increasing access to justice for low-income Texans. The Commission works tirelessly to increase access to the legal system for Texas' most vulnerable residents.

The Supreme Court of Texas created the Texas Access to Justice Commission in 2001 to foster a comprehensive, integrated Legal Aid delivery system for people who need legal help but may not be able to afford it or find it. The Commission's goals include reducing barriers to the justice system and increasing resources and funding for Legal Aid.

Texas Tech University School of Law has long fostered a commitment to service among its students, making pro bono work a critical component of graduation. Of the nine clinical programs it offers, five specifically serve low-income Texans.

Texas Tech University School of Law collaborates with Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, holding two pro bono clinics each semester where students conduct initial client interviews and participate in faculty-led consultations. During the 2025-2026 school year alone, its Civil Practice Clinic closed 47 cases and recovered $20,000 in payback, while its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic closed 53 cases, reduced clients’ tax debt by $136,147, and secured $62,225 in refunds.

Texas Tech University School of Law has fostered a culture of service that not only meets urgent community needs but also inspires graduates.

A third-year student at St. Mary's University School of Law, Madison exemplifies the legal profession's highest ideals through her leadership, service, and commitment to access to justice. Madison currently contributes to Haven for Hope's ID Recovery Program and has served communities through the St. Mary's University School of Law Consumer Protection Clinic, the Texas RioGrande Legal Aid Medical-Legal Partnership, and Earthjustice. In every role, Madison has approached clients with dignity, embraced essential work, and used her legal training to support people who might otherwise go without representation.

Madison's steadfast service embodies the mission of the Texas Access to Justice Commission.
