The Lone Star Flute Circle

The Lone Star Flute Circle A Native American style Flute/World Flute Community Circle Serving the Austin/Central Texas Area. Always Free and Open to the Public!

We meet on the last Saturday of each month at the Round Rock Public Library from 1 pm - 4 pm. ~ The Lone Star Flute Circle ~
—Community, Friendship, Music, Culture ®. A Native American Flute/World Flute Community Circle serving the Austin/Central Texas area. So what is the "Lone Star Flute Circle"?

—The Lone Star Flute Circle is the answer to anyone living in the Central Texas area who plays, or

would like to LEARN HOW TO PLAY, the Native American style flute, or has a love or respect for American Indian music, culture, and art. We are dedicated to preserving the history and promoting the future of the Native American Flute. "Flute Circles" exist throughout the United States (and abroad) and provide a social atmosphere for people interested in Native American & World flutes--but not restricted to flutes... drums, guitars (even iPhone apps) are welcome! We love anything that lets your soul express music. Our members range from musicians, flute makers, & artists, to collectors and historians, from the novice beginner to accomplished recording artists. In fact, we have helped to bring several internationally-known acts to Austin! Many of the Native American flutes in our member's personal collections are either directly inspired by, or in some cases are, early historic flutes found throughout North America. Today's skilled wood-craftspeople have taken tradition to a whole new level by combining state-of-the-art technology with raw talent and craftsmanship to create some of the most beautiful sounding (and looking) instruments ever made. Though we don't sell flutes directly, we can introduce you to those who do. Well-made, concert-tuned wood flutes can be purchased for as little as $50 and are surprisingly easy to play. You'll be playing your soul's music before you know it—and we can help you do that! As with all of our fellow flute circles, we are multicultural and open to the public, and we LOVE to see NEW FACES! And of course, we always welcome our friends from other circles to join us too! By "join us" we simply mean "come spend the day with us". We meet regularly on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Occasionally we will meet at various local Austin hot-spots, such as Zilker Botanical Garden, and John Dromgoole's The Natural Gardener, to provide free concerts for the public. Such concerts are open-mic for our members and visiting guests! Locations and times will be announced at our various e-media outlets. If you've ever been interested in learning about the Native American flute but didn't know where to go, come join us! There will be snacks & drinks, or feel free to bring your own. There is always an open-mic (with reverb/delay) and a comfortable atmosphere so people can share their latest music without fear of being judged. By the way, you don't have to be a musician. Non-playing spouses, family members, and friends are always welcome! We are ALL a family united in our love for all things native to America, especially the peaceful and "haunting" sound of our Nation's very first woodwind. We hope to see you soon....

A BEAUTIFUL, NEW, MYSTERIOUS PLANT, never before documented by modern science, has been discovered right here in Texas, at Big Bend National Park!! The Earth never fails to amaze—when you roam its wild surface with curiosity in your eyes and purpose in your heart!

The tiny plant has been officially named, Ovicula Biradiata, from Ovicula = tiny sheep, in reference to the thick white “wool” that covers the leaves, and Biradiata = referencing the two conspicuous ray petals in each flower. A genetic analysis revealed that this plant is so distinctive that it is not just a new species but best classified as an entirely new genus within the Asteraceae (Daisy) family. It has been affectionately nicknamed “wooly devil” by Park staff.

If you happen to find one of these tiny plants at Big Bend NP, PLEASE give it the respect it deserves… log it’s location for park staff and researchers, and LEAVE IT right where you found—it to live out it’s beautiful, little well-deserved life! Thank you to Deanna for letting me know about this! ~Daniel G. Benes

Hey, Daniel here... I'm typing this from the Galactic Core. Ya know, the brightly glowing area in the universe where all the brightest stars hang out! They're partying pretty hard here. I'm not gonna say the ethyl alcohol is flowing freely, but I think I just saw Leia kiss her Brother, Luke!! Yuck! And the Death Star is in full Glitter Ball Mode!!! Play it again John Williams!! Barkeep, pour me another glass of that spiked Bantha milk!

In all honesty, I'm at home about to watch Alien Romulus with Deanna. I'm comfortable enough in my own skin to enjoy a peaceful New Years Eve at home, as I’ve done many times in the past. In fact, New Years isn’t at all a holiday I normally celebrate. I just flip the page and get on with writing the book.

As a little Clown fish named Dory once said… Happiness is being comfortable in your own safe little pond, while having unrestricted access to the ocean. Or something like that.

As for our New Years goals…
Our most amazing dreams and goals are nothing more than a list of tiny, completely doable tasks. Maybe the tasks are mundane and boring. Maybe they stretch your knowledge, imagination and comfort. Maybe your dream involves some tasks that are better if done by someone else. Don’t be selfish. Surround yourself with great people. The best dreams are accomplished by great teams.

Take Small steps. Take Small bites. Make Small movements forward. Even the most advanced, state-of-the-art clocks move forward only one second at a time. Lifetimes are made of billions of seconds marked by a clock hand that is only capable of one second movements. Don't let any handicap you think you have keep you from moving forward and turning tiny tasks into the monumental achievements and dreams you are capable of, within the precious time you have been gifted. Clocks need winding, so do you. A good hobby, mental getaway or at-home board or video game can help recharge your batteries.

That said, I wish you a happy, healthy collection of doable tasks this year. May you have the eagerness, energy and desire to start and complete them.

Most importantly, I wish you the understanding and wisdom to know that WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE is 1000 times better than what you DON'T. Understanding what that means and being grateful for what (and who) you have will make you a grateful winner before the alarm clock has a chance to wake you up.

~—•—~

Now, I have to go! Alien Romulus is inspiring me to power up one of the several megawatt lasers that I happen to own. Plus I own a black powder cannon. Yeah, okay… I'll see you on the event horizon!

You Are Hereby Wished A Very Meaningful & Happy 2025!

Everyone -
Brian "Bear" Beard passed away about an hour ago. I heard from his sister Betsy late last night that he was under hospice care and the hospice nurse thought he would pass within a day. He was resting comfortably and listening to flute music.
Rest in Peace, Brother Bear.

There are so many things to be THANKFUL and GRATEFUL for in this life. Family, friends, shelter, food, water, clothing, and knowing that at least one other person loves us is more than I could ever ask for. I don’t deserve any of these things. However, I have found myself with so much more, that to be anything but HUMBLY grateful and thankful would be a social, personal, and spiritual injustice.

The difference between thankfulness and ungratefulness is often one’s own perspective. The problem is, perspectives, like cars with misaligned tires, can all too easily wander off course. A skilled, attentive driver, knowing his or her own car will feel the road and the pull of the steering wheel and make small course corrections early and often to avoid veering off the road. But neglected and unchecked, a poor attitude and perspective can lead to a crash & burn that can take others around us, with us.

We should start our travels each day by considering that no matter how difficult our road may be, we are still “lucky” in the eyes of many and we are in control of our own direction and how we respond to potholes and other drivers. Privileges are easily revoked, loved ones will not be here forever, happiness can quickly turn to sadness and loss and material possessions start to degrade, rust and break down, even on a chemical level, the moment they are made. Nothing is “water proof”. There are no true guarantees in this life.

I’m definitely no expert, but what I have learned is that we should LOVE relentlessly and unconditionally. We should always be GRATEFUL and THANKFUL in all things. We should SMILE, LAUGH and SING loudly from the heart without embarrassment, and GIVE BACK more than we take. And when we have trouble sleeping… we should COUNT OUR BLESSINGS instead of sheep. I love you ALL to the Moon and back! Happy Thanksgiving from our home to yours.

Headed out today to camp capers here in Texas for the FluteTree Foundation Gathering. I’ll be teaching and performing along with R. Carlos Nakai, Randy McGinnis, Julia and Robert Gatliff and Meri Superak. All of them are amazing flute players and teachers. Looking forward to reminiscing with old friends and meeting new ones. Temps will be chilly but refreshing from the summer heat we had.

Looking forward to the Halloween party on Tuesday for sure.

Have great week y’all.
