Our hearts go out to those suffering from the California wildfires.

Our board of directors will be matching funds raised and sharing resources so our chapters can create creative campaigns to assist people, pets, and wildlife displaced by the recent fires.

If YOU have good campaign ideas that may help raise funds or awareness, please DM us and we’ll share with our chapters.

Here are some ideas to start with:
Highlight non-profits people can donate to (**and help quantify how much of their dollar goes to those in need**)
- Remind people than animal service groups need support too
- Share easy ways people can send aid and support to firefighters

Stay HEATed!!!

MEET THE TEAM! Kaitlyn is our Director of Outreach and Engagement. 🌼🌿

Greetings! My name is Kaitlyn Schenk, and I am currently living in San Antonio, TX where I work at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio as a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Emergency Department.

I graduated from Texas State with my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and loved the town and campus so much I stayed to obtain my Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Science. I began my H.E.A.T journey as a freshman in undergrad as a human committee member and have since served as a Committee Executive, President, and now Director of Outreach and Engagement for Headquarters. I am extremely passionate about helping others and love getting to hear people share their stories.

In my free time I enjoy cooking, painting, yoga and being by the water. I am a gifted napper, car karaoke enthusiast, my dog’s biggest fan, professional binge-watcher, and self identified plant mom.

MEET THE TEAM! Meet H.E.A.T. Co-founder and HQ president, Ian Smith.

Ian Smith has been hosting community events and leadership dialogues across Texas since 2010 when he co-founded and expanded his dorm-room idea into a registered 501c3 non-profit. The Human-Environmental-Animal-Team (H.E.A.T.) started as a “creative campaign” club aiming to make volunteering fun. Within one year, the club won a cash grant and the title of “Organization of the year” from Texas State University. Since its creation in 2010, Ian has expanded chapters to universities and high schools across Texas. H.E.A.T.’s chapters partake in volunteer work, awareness campaigns, and fundraising.

Ian is an avid animal lover, working with animal rescues and wildlife groups in his spare time. Traveling, outdoor adventures, art, gardening, fitness, dog training, aquarium keeping, and writing are all hobbies Ian regularly focuses on. When he can budget the time, he enjoys public speaking, as seen in his TEDX talk from 2018:

One person’s trash is another person’s DIY project!

These beautiful shelves were repurposed from scrap wood headed to the landfill.

The process is simple!
1) Cut scrap wood to the perfect size for your project
2) Sand the scrap wood
3) Stain the wood to fit your style
4) Place your new shelves on brackets and they are ready for display! (check out your local repurpose stores or thrift stores for brackets!)

*watch out for stray nails!

HAPPY
Here are some sustainable ways to dispose of your pumpkins:

1. If they haven’t rotted, COOK THEM! Pumpkin flesh and seeds are delicious and nutritious.

2. Look up local animal sanctuaries in your area, and donate pumpkins. Many animals love to tear into pumpkins and it can be valuable enrichment for non-releasable wildlife. in San Antonio, for example, says their chimps LOVE to play with pumpkins!

3. Compost/ plant them! They will decompose ad fertilize your garden, and the seeds will sprout new pumpkin plants for next year!
