Texas Playback Theatre

Texas Playback Theatre A Unique Blend of Non-Scripted Theatre & Personal Storytelling Playback Theatre is collaborative creation between actors and audience.

Someone tells a story -moment from their life - chooses actors to play the roles, then “watches” as the story is played back with artistic form and creative subtext. Playback Theatre creates ritual space where any story - ordinary, extraordinary or difficult is told – spontaneously transformed into theatre. Each person's uniqueness is affirmed while simultaneously building community. The original

Playback Theatre Company came together in 1975, with Jonathan Fox as its director and his wife and creative partner Jo Salas. This was in the mid-Hudson valley of upstate New York and part of the experimental theatre explorations of the 1970s - looking for ways of reaching out to its audience, bringing theatre closer to everyday reality, and breaking away from the tradition of scripted theatre. Since then Playback Theatre has spread across the world with companies and practitioners in over 30 countries. It thrives in a variety of settings, existing as community theatre gatherings as well as a professional service to both the business and social sector.

A Ritual to Read to Each Other

If you don't know the kind of person I am
and I don't know the kind of person you are
a pattern that others made may prevail in the world
and following the wrong god home we may miss our star.

For there is many a small betrayal in the mind,
a shrug that lets the fragile sequence break
sending with shouts the horrible errors of childhood
storming out to play through the broken d**e.

And as elephants parade holding each elephant's tail,
but if one wanders the circus won't find the park,
I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty
to know what occurs but not recognize the fact.

And so I appeal to a voice, to something shadowy,
a remote important region in all who talk:
though we could fool each other, we should consider--

lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark.

For it is important that awake people be awake,
or a breaking line may discourage them back to sleep;
the signals we give--yes or no, or maybe--
should be clear: the darkness around us is deep.
