TCTELA All Sections Meeting: The Legislative Update featuring Raise Your Hand Texas

Summertime is upon us, and the time to rest, relax, and recharge has come. However, TCTELA is still actively working for Texas ELA teachers as the new proposed reading list is being reviewed by the SBOE.

TCTELA proudly partners with Kelley Thomas of Raise Your Hand Texas to bring you our TCTELA
Summer Legislative Update. You will leave with an understanding of how recent state policy will shape Texas RLA classrooms in the 26-27 school year and beyond!

After the main session, you’ll have the opportunity to choose a Section Breakout Room for the remainder of the hour, where we'll complete a call to action that aligns with your specific literacy role, all while connecting with other educators!

Bonus: We're giving away books, because what better way to spend the summer than with a great read? We will have children's literature, middle grades, and YA books. Simply like, comment, and tag someone else on this post.

📢 Important update for Texas educators.

The literary works list connected to HB 1605 received first-reading approval at the April State Board of Education meeting. The vote is not yet complete. The list is now posted for public comment, and the next vote is expected during the week of June 22nd.

This is not over. And your voice still matters.

Here is how you can stay engaged:

📝 REVIEW THE LIST AND SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENT. You do not need to write a lengthy response. A few sentences grounded in your classroom experience are enough and they matter. Deadline: June 15

📣 Introducing the Newest Members of the TCTELA Dream Cohort!

TCTELA is thrilled to continue investing in early educators across the great state of Texas — and today, we get to celebrate the next chapter of that commitment.

Please join us in welcoming our newest Dreamers and program mentors to the TCTELA Dream Cohort! This program is built on the belief that when we invest in teachers early in their careers, we strengthen ELA education for every student they will ever teach.

We are deeply grateful to National Council of Teachers of English for their generous funding and continued partnership in making this program possible. Their support allows us to keep growing, keep dreaming, and keep showing up for Texas ELA educators.

We are so excited to see what this cohort will be able to accomplish! 🌟
