Operation Game Thief

Operation Game Thief is Texas' wildlife Crime-stoppers program, offering rewards of up to $1,000.00 for information leading to the arrest and conviction for a wildlife crime. Begun in 1981 as a result of laws passed by the 67th Legislature to help curtail poaching, the program, a function of the law enforcement division of Texas Parks and Wildlife, is highly successful, having been responsible for

the payment of over $195,000.00 in rewards. Privately funded, the program is dependent on financial support from the public through the purchase of OGT memberships and merchandise, donations, sponsorships, and gifts.

🚨 BUSTED 🚨
Operation Game Thief Online Tip Leads to Multi-County Investigation

Recently, Texas Game Wardens received an anonymous Tip411 online report of an unpermitted business advertising seafood packages online. The tipster also reported concerns that people had previously become ill after eating food purchased from the business.

The tip indicated the business was promoting seafood sales at various locations across multiple counties. Texas Game Wardens coordinated a response and checked the advertised locations, where the business was found operating out of refrigerated trucks in parking lots.

During the investigation, wardens conducted interviews and inspections that uncovered numerous violations, including:

β€’ Multiple No Fish Dealer Truck License violations
β€’ Multiple No FISH Dealer Decal violations
β€’ No Finfish Dealer License
β€’ Possession of co***ne
β€’ Possession of ma*****na
β€’ Possession of methamphetamine
β€’ Possession of drug paraphernalia

Texas Game Wardens made one arrest and issued multiple citations as a result of the investigation.

This case highlights how one anonymous tip can lead to significant enforcement action and help protect the public and Texas’ natural resources.

If you witness a wildlife, hunting, or fishing violation, report it anonymously through Operation Game Thief:

OPERATION GAME THIEF – PHONE TIP
ILLEGAL NET, UNDERSIZED RED DRUM, AND MORE

On Sept. 4, a Texas Game Warden responded to an Operation Game Thief call about men illegally cast netting undersized red drum at Calaveras Lake near the fishing pier. The tipster provided a vehicle description, license plate, and clothing details for one of the suspects, all of which proved critical.

Soon after the warden arrived, a grey Ford SUV matching the description sped away from the pier. The warden caught up and stopped the vehicle after confirming the matching plate. The driver, wearing the clothing described, admitted to catching β€œsmall fish.” In the back, the warden found an illegal oversized cast net and an ice chest loaded with 17 undersized red drum (11–14 inches) and several tilapia. (Red drum must be at least 20 inches to keep, and the daily bag limit is 3.)

The driver received multiple citations. The fish and net were seized, and civil restitution will be assessed.

While wrapping up, another vehicle from the pier circled back. The warden approached the vehicle and after a short interview, the driver admitted to cast netting tilapia, but had no fishing license. The warden seized 12 tilapia and issued a citation for no fishing license.

This case was made possible by one person observing a flagrant violation against our state’s natural resources and reporting it through Operation Game Thief. Individuals who report fish, wildlife, or boating crimes may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. The public’s involvement is vital in protecting Texas’ wild things and wild places for present and future generations.
