Migration Alert: Over 443 million birds are forecast to fly across the East Coast and eastern Midwest tonight. To help birds make their journey safely, turn off all off all nonessential lights from 11 PM to 6 AM to keep them from becoming disoriented. Make windows safer with bird-friendly treatments to prevent collisions. More than a billion birds die in glass collisions every year. We’ve been doing this Hornsby Bend Monthly Bird Survey since 1999, and the October survey is always filled with migrants especially raptors. Today didn’t disappoint with a peregrine falcon, a northern harrier, a merlin, a pair of bald eagles and more. 115 species total and Joey McCraken won the duck!

HIGH MIGRATION EXPECTED TONIGHT

Did you know that most birds migrate at night? They often use the moon, stars, and sun to navigate. Light pollution can interfere with these signals and cause a serious problem for birds: they might be thrown off course or become so disoriented that they circle until they fall to exhaustion or collide with buildings. You can help with just a flick of a switch—plus you’ll save money on energy costs!

Turn off lights at night on unoccupied floors and in unused spaces.
Close curtains and blinds.
Turn off exterior floodlights during bird migration season.
Opt for shielded lighting that directs lights downward.
Try using task lighting at your workstation instead of overhead lights if you’re working late.

A recent analysis in Science of more than 116,000 bird songs has revealed that the astonishing variety of passerine birdsong is built from just eight basic acoustic motifs, like trills, whistles, and harmonic notes.

The findings also reveal that local environments greatly shape how birds communicate around the world.
