Meet Our Bird of the Week: The Barred Owl ✨

Barred Owls disappear into the tree canopy easily due to their feather patterning: brown and white feathers streaking vertically on their chest like bark, with horizontal bands across their neck (like a cozy scarf) and lining their back. Their color vision isn’t very good, as they opt for better sensitivity in low-light conditions instead. This low-light vision is largely the reason they hunt at dusk and dawn, when the gap between their visual acuity and that of their prey’s is widest.

We are excited to partner with Sightseer Coffee on bird-themed cold brews for this Saturday's World Migratory Bird Day at Hornsby Bend! Grab a coffee to enjoy while strolling the grounds to learn more about birds and conservation.

Carolina Wren: This drink is bold and spicy, just like our precocious bird of the year. It's a shaken cold brew flavored with pineapple and a touch of cayenne, served with a tajin rim. It's a combination that works beautifully!

Chimney Swift: What better way to honor this beloved bird than a flavor that reflects its namesake hangout spot? Smoky (see what we did there?) sea salt and maple are stirred into cold brew for a smooth coffee experience.

Black-bellied Whistling-Duck: A vanilla cold brew, because classic recognizes classic. Reliable but never boring, just like the ubiquitous duck that is a fixture of Hornsby Bend no matter the time of year.

Drip coffee will also be available for purchase if that's more your speed!
