NYOS Charter School—Not Your Ordinary School—is a tuition-free, public charter school that was founded in 1998 by a group of parents who wanted more out of education for their children. It is through a commitment to our students, our staff, and our academic excellence that we have been able to grow to serving more than 1,800 students in PreK through 12th grade. At NYOS, our mission is to educate t

he whole student through rigorous academics, innovative strategies and expectations for civic engagement. Student learning is optimized through research-based professional development, small class sizes, field-based experiences, service learning projects, and a commitment to meeting each individual student’s needs. Teachers consistently monitor student performance and utilize data to guide curriculum and instruction. Professional development is job-embedded so that teachers have a minimum of seven hours each week for planning and meeting with teams. The allocated time allows teachers to review student performance, align curriculum, and make data-driven decisions regarding student instruction. Our educators provide a challenging curriculum in an intellectually safe and collaborative culture. Students advance in academic knowledge and proficiencies, coupled with crucial life skills: organization, time management, conflict resolution, flexibility, communication, and advocacy. In this way, NYOS students are poised for success from the time they begin their education with us until after they leave high school.

What inspired parent volunteer, Mandy Walker, to start volunteering with NYOS, and what keeps her coming back? Check out her response:
"I have 3 children that attend NYOS and wanting to be more invested and informed about the school inspired me to start volunteering. I love getting to know NYOS staff and working with other great parent volunteers. That keeps me coming back."

NYOS was founded my parents and continues to be fueled by parent involvement. We ask every parent to volunteer at least twenty hours every year. It's not too soon to sign up for 2026-27 and it is so easy with the Track It Forward App https://www.trackitforward.com/site/nyos-charter-school
