Representing Travis County Judge Andy Brown ex-officio on our Board of Directors, we welcome Cherise Burdeen!

After earning a bachelor’s in public administration from Miami University (Ohio) and a master’s in criminal justice from Indiana University, she began her career with the DOJ's National Institute of Justice. After fieldwork that included time with the Safer Foundation in Chicago and post-9/11 federal service with the Department of Homeland Security, Cherise spent fifteen years with the Pretrial Justice Institute (PJI), an organization responsible for putting pretrial injustice on system leaders' agenda.

Cherise has been recognized for her innovative strategies to raise awareness, amass a broad constituency of stakeholder groups, provide technical assistance and training on policy reforms, and engage in communications efforts. She has extensive experience with strategic planning, initiative management, and designing change efforts.

Late in her tenure at PJI, she began investigating bias in the data used to create pretrial risk assessment instruments and community supervision matrices. This led to a shift in long-held policy positions and, ultimately, a decision to leave PJI to allow it to advance its own future. Cherise then served as Vice President for Operations at the National Legal Aid and Defender Association while attending National Louis University to pursue a PhD in Community Psychology.

Her research focused on the relationship between social-emotional functioning, cultural competence, and client-centeredness in public defense. Her commitments are advancing laws and policies that center equity, belonging, and well-being; operationalizing the vision of those closest to the problems; and unlearning our othering culture. She began serving as the County Executive for Innovative Justice and Program Analysis with Travis County (TX) in the summer of 2026.

ROCKSTAR OF THE QUARTER!

Written by his peers…Jayce got awarded Rockstar of the Quarter in his first 90 days!

Jayce's ability to connect with patients, passion to learn, create, his initiative and connection to the mission is outstanding. He taught Motivational Interviewing training within in his first 90 days in a way that landed incredibly with staff. He is receptive to feedback and eager to learn and overall just curious. There are few things more exciting than someone who is curious and excited to learn and teach. Watching him engage with clients is a treat and it is clear that Jayce has such a holistic view of recovery that seeps out into truly patient-centered conversations. We enjoy Jayce as a co-worker, fellow person in recovery, and as a human.

We are often asked by experts in the field “How do you provide such a quality service 24/7/365 for such a small budget?”

Our answer is often “a small group of women who refuse to give up on the mission or on each other” although recently we engaged Pastner Leadership and Quiet Mouth Communications to help us quantify and operationalize our secret sauce.

This morning our CEO found this scene.

Laura: Shepherd, do you work here now?

Shepherd: No

Laura: Are you sure? It looks like you’re in a meeting with Amy.

Shepherd: No, my MOM is in a meeting that’s why I’m in Amy’s office.

One thing we know for sure, a leadership team of working moms has to be both flexible and creative, and we have all of that in spades!

Introducing our new Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Martin! Here is what he sent to our staff!
———————————————————————
My name is Joseph Martin, and I was born in Harlingen, TX, raised in San Antonio, and have been a South/Central Texan most of my life (this area will always be home). I’m a physician formally trained (residency and fellowship) in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pre-Hospital/EMS, and I am board certified in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Addiction Medicine.

How I came to be involved and fall in love with Addiction Medicine was purely an accident, but a fortuitous and rather “greater purpose” one at that. I look forward to sharing the entire story in person if you’re interested.

My professional passions are “hands on” empathetic clinical care, motivational interviewing, education, team building, and the ethos for my work is best described as “servant leadership.” My role models were and always have been the ones who rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty with unwavering approachability and that will always be what personally guides me.

Personally, I love good food, deep conversations, my dogs (and one crazy cat), my family (we’re Italian and mutt by blood), Latin culture (si puedo hablar Español), art and travel, an active lifestyle, and my fiancé (she said yes on Lake Travis this past weekend!).

From an addiction practice perspective, I look forward to working with Laura and the entire team at growing and contributing to her and the whole team’s goals and aspirations at making the Sobering Center a transformative, trailblazing, inclusive, capable, and collaborative place of healthcare for our patients. What y’all have already built and accomplished is nothing short of impressive, and I look forward to learning from everyone and contributing!
