The American Federation of Aviculture (AFA) is a nonprofit national organization established in 1974, whose purpose is to represent all aspects of aviculture and to educate the public about keeping and breeding birds in captivity. AFA has a membership consisting of bird breeders, pet bird owners, avian veterinarians, pet/bird store owners, bird product manufacturers, and other people interested in

the future of aviculture. AFA defines anyone keeping exotic birds in captivity as an "aviculturist" but AFA advocates that this designation carries with it certain responsibilities transcending those of the owners of domesticated pets like dogs and cats. AFA believes holders of exotic birds need to be aware of the special needs of the species they hold, be aware of their conservation status, up-to-date research findings enhancing the well-being of the birds, and the state and federal regulations pertaining to exotic birds.

Welcome Just4Birds to AFA!

AFA is pleased to welcome Diana and Just4birds in Valrico, Florida as a new AFA Commercial Member.

Robin and Georgia recently stopped by Just4Birds during their travels bringing the AFA Legislative Awareness Workshops across the country. These in-person visits are a wonderful reminder of how important local bird businesses, aviculturists, educators, and advocates are to the future of aviculture.

Thank you to Diana and Just4Birds for supporting AFA and for being part of a community dedicated to education, responsible aviculture, avian welfare, conservation, and legislative awareness.

We are excited to have you with us!

Supporting Education. Strengthening Aviculture. Inspiring the Future.

Harrison’s Bird Foods is proud to donate $2,000 to the American Federation of Aviculture (AFA) Conference Fund in support of avian education, collaboration, and responsible aviculture.

For decades, the AFA has played an essential role in advancing bird education, conservation, and bringing together veterinarians, breeders, rescues, bird owners, and avian professionals from around the world.

At Harrison’s, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for improving the health and lives of companion birds. We are honored to support the important work AFA continues to do for the avian community.

This contribution will help support conference programming, educational opportunities, and community-building efforts that benefit bird enthusiasts and professionals worldwide.

Together, we can continue building a healthier future for birds through science, education, and collaboration.

**AFA Disaster Relief Update — Garden Grove, California**

AFA Disaster Relief was grateful to be able to help provide immediate bird-care supplies during a recent evacuation connected to the chemical incident in Garden Grove, California.

Our role is limited, but when aviculturists and their birds are displaced, even basic supplies like food, perches, and temporary care items can make a real difference.

Thank you to Link for sharing his update, and thank you to the AFA members whose support makes this kind of assistance possible. We are relieved to hear that the evacuation has been lifted and that Link, his family, and his flock will be able to return home.

AFA does not provide direct monetary assistance, but we remain committed to supporting aviculturists and birds with practical disaster relief supplies when we are able.

**AFA Disaster Relief exists because of the continued support of our members and the aviculture community.**

NYC ACTION ALERT: Oppose NYC Intro 0912-2026

Protect Responsible Aviculture and Pet Bird Ownership in New York City

The New York City Council has introduced Intro 0912-2026, a proposal that would ban the sale of birds in pet shops throughout New York City.
If passed, this legislation would prohibit pet stores from displaying, offering for sale, transferring, or selling pet birds including parrots, cockatiels, parakeets, finches, macaws, and many other companion bird species.
This proposal is another step in the growing effort by animal rights organizations to eliminate responsible aviculture and restrict the public’s ability to own and enjoy birds.
The American Federation of Aviculture (AFA) strongly opposes legislation that unfairly targets responsible bird owners, ethical breeders, hobbyists, educators, and small businesses.
Why This Matters
Responsible aviculture:
* Supports conservation and education
* Promotes proper bird care and husbandry
* Provides healthy, domestically bred companion birds
* Supports families, hobbyists, educators, and small businesses
* Encourages public appreciation and understanding of birds
Banning bird sales in pet shops will not improve animal welfare. Instead, it:
* Hurts responsible businesses
* Reduces public access to properly cared-for companion birds
* Pushes consumers toward unregulated sources
* Undermines responsible aviculture and educational outreach

TAKE ACTION NOW
We encourage all bird owners, breeders, clubs, exhibitors, pet businesses, veterinarians, and aviculture supporters to respectfully contact the New York City Council and voice opposition to Intro 0912-2026.
Ask council members to:
* Oppose Intro 0912-2026
* Support responsible aviculture and pet ownership
* Work with stakeholders on reasonable animal welfare solutions rather than outright bans
Suggested Message
I respectfully urge you to oppose NYC Intro 0912-2026. Responsible aviculture plays an important role in education, conservation, and companion animal care. This proposal unfairly impacts responsible bird owners, breeders, educators, and small businesses while doing little to improve animal welfare. Please oppose this legislation and support balanced, reasonable policies instead of broad bans on bird sales.
