Family,

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This month we honor and remember a longtime supporter of WhatsintheMirror and matriarch of our family, Zuhura Namibia. My grandmother was a mental health advocate as well as peer support champion. She used her lived experience of living with Schizophrenia to help so many people in her community and beyond. This month wants to bring awareness to this mental health condition and combat stigma around it in her honor. Join us all month long ❤️🙏🏾- Tarik

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel and behave. It may result in a mix of hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and behavior. Hallucinations involve seeing things or hearing voices that aren’t observed by others. Delusions involve firm beliefs about things that are not true. People with schizophrenia can seem to lose touch with reality, which can make daily living very hard.

A transformative storytelling and healing experience centering the voices of people living with or impacted by HIV
presents Lemons to Lemonade is a transformative storytelling and healing experience centering the voices of people living with or impacted by HIV. Ingrained in this experience, is the symbolism of turning pain into power, featuring 12 stories focusing on the journey of 12 stages of grief while navigating the emotional complexities of life with HIV through vulnerability, resilience, and joy.

In addition to the guided storytelling, attendees will engage with a series of interactive activity stations, each station designed to catalyze connection, reflection and release. Starting with squeezing real lemons, the collective grief, recording messages of hope, to building a community survival guide, each station invites participants to participate in the metaphorical grief journey into transformation.

An amalgamation of art, sound, culture and most importantly, community, immerses us all into a space for laughter, tears, joy and strength.

Mission: To create a shared space, centering people living with HIV, where grief is processed and transformed into resilience, received by collective solidarity, experienced through storytelling.

Audience: People Living with HIV, Black people, Brown people, other POC, ELDER q***r community, Q***r community, Trans people, People of other sexual identities.

Lemons to Lemonade is more than an event—it’s a sacred space for healing, storytelling, and transformation. 🍋✨
Join us on December 6th at The Cathedral ATX as we center the voices of Black, Brown, Q***r, and HIV-positive community members—through art, truth, and collective care.
This is a journey through grief, joy, and everything in between. With guided storytelling, interactive healing stations (yes, there will be real lemon squeezing 🍋), and a final community toast, we’ll witness what happens when pain is met with presence.

World AIDS Day 2025 Proclamation Reading:

First and foremost, I would like to thank you and/ or your organizations for all that you do in the community alongside the Austin Area HIV Planning Council and many others working and helping those impacted by HIV. With all that has occurred this year, we want to take the time to acknowledge all community members that continue to do the work within the HIV community by presenting the World AIDS Day Proclamation. This post is to inform you all of the date, time, and location that the World AIDS Day Proclamation will be read by Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes earlier before the start time to be present for the reading of the Proclamation as well as photos to be take. Due to space, we are asking for 2-4 representatives to be present from your organization for photo opportunities. Below is the Save the Date for this event and we will also send a calendar invite as well.

The Proclamation will be read at the “Lemons to Lemonade” event hosted by: What’s in the Mirror?, Inc., Austin Public Health, Austin Area HIV Planning Council, Austin Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Pride in Black ATX. Lemons to Lemonade is a transformative storytelling and healing experience centering the voices of people living with or impacted by HIV. Ingrained in this experience, is the symbolism of turning pain into power, featuring 12 stories focusing on the journey of the 12 stages of grief while navigating the emotional complexities of life with HIV through vulnerability, resilience, and joy.
