From the Rio Grande Valley to Austin: Meet Marcos Martinez!

Marcos Martinez’s relationship with trees began long before his career in urban forestry. Growing up in a new neighborhood in the Rio Grande Valley, just north of the U.S.–Mexico border, green space was scarce. There were cornfields, dust, and a few parks. But his father changed that.

One day, he brought home two small live oak saplings and turned planting them into a family event. Marcos was only a toddler, but that moment stayed with him. Those two trees are still alive today, growing alongside his family home, rooted in family, care, and hope.

“Trees were the original critical infrastructure to this planet.“

That understanding of trees as living systems connects directly to City of Austin Government 's shift from the Office of Sustainability to Austin Climate Action and Resilience. To Marcos, the name change signals urgency. Sustainability is important, but resilience is about action and adaptation. Climate change is already here, and cities must prepare for hotter temperatures, stronger storms, and longer droughts.

It's tree-care season! Don't forget to give your trees some TLC! 💚

Basic steps you can take to help your tree thrive:

🌳 Water deeply! Trees in Texas typically need 10 gallons of water per inch of diameter at breast height (4.5’) every week that it doesn’t rain at least 1 inch. Younger or recently planted trees need about 20 gallons each week until they are established (3 years).

🌳 Apply mulch! The correct way to mulch a tree is to apply a 2-to-4-inch layer of organic mulch starting 2 inches away from the trunk until you reach the canopy’s edge or drip-line. Avoid applying mulch to the base of the tree, as this can create a mulch volcano that can suffocate the tree and encourage trunk rot.

🌳Check for girdling roots! (pictured in photo 2) It's better to find roots that could be circling your tree earlier than later! Once they grow to be mature roots, they can severely affect the health of your tree ultimately leading to a shorter life span.

The Mystery Creek Cottonwood stands at the spot where Mystery Creek heads north from Red Bird Lane, crossing the lot where the proposed project is sited. It is a tireless sentinel and an anchor for our forested little neighborhood. This tree has overseen the entire modern history of Deep South Austin. The aerial shots of our neighborhood clearly show the tree in existence circa 1940’s!

This beautiful heritage tree has been nominated for the Large Tree Category in the Austin Tree of the Year Awards! Nominations are open until July 24th, 2026!

Marina Weikel Ramirez is a manager on our reforestation program. She visited over 90 landowners affected by the 2025’s devastating floods. Marina spoke with them and heard their stories. There was grief and heartbreak, but also healing and hope.

Landowners shared how some of the oldest trees saved people’s lives, holding back their dislodged and floating homes from the main torrent. Others shared how the flood took the trees away from the creek, letting them see each other’s houses for the first time, while leaving over 100ft of nature near the river stripped clean.

TreeFolks is working with those affected for the long term. We created our Rooted in Recovery program to help plant thousands of trees that had been lost. These impacted communities along the Sandy, Cow, and Brushy Creeks, and the San Gabriel River will receive our support for three years.

TreeFolks efforts will be beyond just planting trees: we will monitor and assess their development, assuring these new trees strengthen the land.

Our service is completely free to landowners, but anyone can help support this project! Every contribution will go directly to planting trees in the affected sites.

🌳2,924 were adopted by the community at our free public events
🤠 119 were distributed to local community groups, including Foundation Communities, the Islamic Center of Greater Austin, Colorado Crossings HOA, the Little Learning Grove, and St. Francis School.
🌺 48 unique species of native trees were distributed and planted in our urban forest!

Thank you to everyone who adopted a tree this season!

A special thank you to our partners at the City of Austin Government and Austin Energy for championing the program's growth and helping us meet the growing demand for trees in the city.

We also want to express our gratitude to H-E-B, one of Austin’s most generous community partners, for their ongoing support, hosting a portion of our in-person tree adoption events each year, and providing a trusted and accessible space to connect people with trees.

After the devastating July 4, 2025 flood, recovery has meant grieving loved ones, standing with neighbors, and rebuilding with care.

TreeFolks efforts will be beyond just planting trees: we will monitor and assess their development, assuring these new trees strengthen the land.

Prior field studies by the Reforestation team have reported approximately 67% tree survival for trees planted with Groasis Waterboxxes. The team will apply this same technology and planting techniques to our reforestation work in flood affected areas during the coming seasons, ensuring that each tree planted can help restore resilient ecologies and heal the communities we cherish and care for.

Join is in helping provide long term impact for our neighbors along Sandy Creek, Cow Creek, and the San Gabriel River - Support Rooted in Recovery by making a donation today: treefolks.org/recovery
