The Criticisms of Higher Education: A Reply

"American higher education is one of the greatest success stories in history. Not only do significant advances in medicine and technology owe their origins to university faculty scholars, but also undergraduate education results in both personal and public benefits. College graduates have greater earning potential than high school graduates, better employability, increased productivity, enhanced communication skills, improved self-confidence, advanced critical thinking skills, broader networks and advancement opportunities, and healthier, happier lives, according to the Education Pays 2023 report. Indeed, American colleges and universities have been the envy of the world."

How to be Emotionally Present at Work When You Have Real Stuff Going on at Home

"We all go through hard times. Whether it's managing an illness, supporting a sick family member, going through a divorce, aiding a struggling child, or dealing with a job loss in the family, weathering a crisis is an emotional and logistical undertaking.

Most of us have to work during these difficult stretches, which means we can't navigate them as privately or as independently as we'd like. While this can be challenging, there are benefits to managing stressful times in the comfort of our professional communities. Existing in a known space driven by a familiar routine and populated with supporters can be helpful when we're struggling.

It's important, though, to proceed with a plan. Developing a self-care strategy and remaining realistic about how much you're asking of yourself are key to staying emotionally grounded and present when you're working through a challenging time. Here's what to consider as you get started."

Don't worry, it's not too late to register for Great Teaching Round Up, running May 20-23! We still have a handful of spaces left and we would love to slide you into one.

The Great Teaching Round Up differs from most conferences in that the program is created by the participants themselves. The goals of the seminar include:

1. Sharing methods and techniques
2. Celebrating good teaching
3. Creative, realistic problem solving
4. Exploration of new ideas
5. Introspection and self-appraisal
6. Professional and personal renewal

Novice to veteran, rural or urban, year after year, faculty tell us that Great Teaching Round Up is the best transition between the Spring and Summer!

"I have learned so much new information in these four days as opposed to my first year of teaching. The informal settings and atmosphere of the Round Up conference has been wonderful."

"This is my second session in two years and benefited as much this time as the last."

"Too many [insights] to list: new books to read, tips for my own classroom (and I thought I knew everything!), and tips to share with adjuncts and colleagues."

Your school could land $50K in Lumina's first-ever Instagram grant challenge!

"Let’s tell a better story about community colleges

From excellent student services to beautiful campus facilities, heartfelt community engagement, and dynamic classroom experiences, community colleges embody the dreams and aspirations of their communities.

But too often, the narrative about who should attend community college (and why) centers on deficit-based framing. These narratives are dominated by competing data points that don’t always paint a complete picture of the range of experiences or the profound impact of a community college education."

Are you wondering why you should invest in the Great Teaching Round Up this year?

Here are some GREAT reasons why!

This seminar is for YOU by YOU! The Great Teaching Round Up is dedicated to bringing teachers together to refresh the joy and love of teaching. The facilitators are previous attendees that believe in this seminar and want to connect with new participants and veterans.

Challenge your mind to new ideas and expand your knowledge beyond the thoughts that you're used to. You're already a great teacher, but this experience allows you to explore and discover the great teacher within yourself.

Shape your interpersonal and social-emotional skills with other teachers to go beyond the technical side of teaching and enter the emotional and personal experiences that shape a teacher's personal identity.

You don't have to worry about anything! We know it's a high price but all that means is that when you arrive at the Y.O. Ranch all you need to do is worry about growing your skillset. This immersive experience takes care of lodging and food. All you need to cover is travel!

This is an experience that you don't want to miss at all. Registration is now open at

Some days it seems that much of what faculty are asked to spend their time on takes them further and further from the immediate experience of teaching students. The Great Teaching Round Up is all about the lived reality of working with students and growing in our profession.
