Shoal Creek Conservancy

Shoal Creek Conservancy Champions of the 13-square-mile Shoal Creek Watershed and the creek and trail running through it. Shoal Creek is in the heart of Austin, Texas.

In 1839, it was the city’s original western boundary but today it is an artery into its urban core. In recent years, conditions in and around the watercourse have declined and in 2013 the Shoal Creek Conservancy was formed to help rejuvenate Shoal Creek for the enjoyment of all Austinites – present and future. Our four areas of focus include:

• Water: Impr

oving water quality and mitigating flood risk
• Parks: Enhancing habitat and green spaces
• History: Preserving Shoal Creek’s historical significance

Shoal Creek Conservancy had the pleasure of attending City Parks Alliance's Greater & Greener Conference last week in Austin. We were delighted to lead a bike ride, share Austin's oldest hike-and-bike trail with attendees, and visit special spots including Duncan Park, Pease Park, and Split Rock Canyon. SCC's year-round work brings us closer to the Shoal Creek Trail being connected and accessible for Austinites of all ages and abilities.

Shoal Creek was rushing from the recent rains during our cleanup last Saturday! Eventually, the water level dropped enough for folks to safely walk along the creek. Despite the flowing water, our large group of volunteers cleared sediment from the Trail from 6th-12th Sts and collected over 165 lbs of litter and recycling from the watershed. We’re so grateful for all of the volunteers who came out and helped make the Trail more accessible after so much rain!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who helped us with an exciting new project on Sunday, at Seiders Springs! We introduced staff and volunteers to our new w**d wrench, using it to remove smaller Ligustrum and invasive Chinese elm in the park! The w**d wrench grabs the tree and gently pulls the roots up from the ground, making it an easy and quick way to remove newer invasive trees. Volunteers also helped with some w**ding in our new wildflower meadow, and we admired the permanent Wildflower Meadow and Grow Zone signs, recently installed in the park. Thank you again to our volunteers for working so hard on Sunday!

Thank you once again to our wonderful downtown Creekside Neighbor volunteers who removed over 800 lbs of trash from Shoal Creek and the Trail downtown last Saturday! We are extremely grateful for our downtown neighbors and their stewardship towards Shoal Creek! This is a recurring creekside neighbor cleanup that takes place every 2nd Saturday of the month.

We had an amazing time on Sunday in Brentwood Neighborhood Park, for our Creekside Neighbors Popup event! Many watershed residents stopped by while heading to the playground or walking their dogs, and grabbed a Creekside Neighbors Menu or a seed ball kit to go. It was a joy to speak with all the families who are interested in learning more about Shoal Creek Conservancy and how to be better water stewards!

Y’all helped clear the inlets after some heavy rains this week, and removed many lawn bags full of w**ds. Take a look at this gorgeous wildflower meadow in Duncan Park! The City of Austin has many meadows like this one that serve important ecological functions beyond beautifying public green spaces.

Wildflower meadows also provide critical habitat for pollinators, improve rain infiltration, which reduces erosion and runoff, and help to mitigate climate change by storing carbon in the soil.
