A title can tell you who someone is. Understanding the preparation behind it tells you more.

“CRNA” stands for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. CRNAs are advanced practice nurses whose preparation includes registered nursing experience, critical care experience, specialized nurse anesthesia education, and national certification.

For someone preparing for a procedure, those letters may be unfamiliar. A clear explanation can help patients and families better understand the professional providing their care.

For our members, it’s also a reminder that explaining the profession doesn’t have to start with technical language. Start with the person, the preparation, and the role.

Before becoming a CRNA, Jennifer Andersen was a flight nurse in Alaska. Encouragement from former flight partners who had entered nurse anesthesia helped her see a new path, one that built on her skills and offered the same sense of purpose.

Now, after 15 years as a CRNA in Midland, Texas, Jennifer brings that passion to her role as TxANA’s president-elect. For her, the profession’s rewards include easing patients’ anxiety, pain, and fear, along with the lifelong friendships and mentors she has found along the way.

Heading into 2027, she sees an opportunity to build on the previous board’s work: advancing health policy, expanding member benefits, strengthening outreach, and bringing more members into the association’s activities.

Her message for the legislative session is direct: stay informed and ready to respond. Read TxANA’s emails, follow advocacy alerts, and recognize that your experience and feedback may be needed.

Jennifer encourages SRNAs and early-career CRNAs to ask questions, attend advocacy events, and learn the profession’s history alongside its clinical practice. As she puts it, “We stand on the shoulders of giants.”

Above all, she wants members to know they have a part in what comes next: “We are stronger together, and this Board of Directors has big plans that involve all of us!”

From aerospace dreams to the operating room—this is where service leads.

For the U.S. Navy’s birthday, we’re honoring a member who lived it: Wayne S. Nurmi, HM3.

Wayne grew up in San Diego in a family with deep military roots, his father, grandfather, granduncle, and uncle all served. He set out to be an aerospace engineer, until a color vision deficiency closed that door. So he enlisted as a Navy Hospital Corpsman and surgical technologist, where he met the Navy CRNAs who showed him exactly what he wanted to become.

He deployed to a fleet hospital in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. He served aboard the USS Long Beach on drug interdiction missions on both sides of the Panama Canal. Then he used his G.I. Bill to earn his BSN, and went on to become a CRNA.

Today, Wayne has spent 18 years with Capitol Anesthesiology in Austin, the last 11 as site chief at Ascension Seton Hays.

The path wasn’t the one he planned. It was the one that needed him.

To Wayne, and to every service member, veteran, and military family who has carried that commitment from the field to the OR: thank you.

One night in the ER, James Stockman saw the work that would inspire his future.

While working as an aide, he watched a CRNA successfully intubate a patient after two physicians had been unable to do so. In awe, he began asking who that person was and what they did. That CRNA is now someone James knows and calls a friend.

“Once I found out what a CRNA did, I was hooked.”

Today, James Stockman, MSNA, CRNA, NSPM-C, serves as TxANA’s president and manages a growing anesthesia management company. He loves that every case brings something different. The most rewarding moments are deeply personal: easing a patient’s anxiety or fear and guiding them safely through anesthesia.

That commitment to care carries into his leadership. James supports high standards among the providers in his company and brings confidence to TxANA’s board as it prepares for the work ahead. He also recognizes that a strong association depends on its members: their experience, involvement, and willingness to help.

Thank you, James, for your dedication to patients, your colleagues, and the profession that first inspired you in that ER.

We’re not done celebrating.

Sam Carr, SRNA, is a 2026 recipient of TxANA’s SRNA Convention Scholarship, recognizing student nurse anesthetists who demonstrate academic excellence, professional commitment, and meaningful engagement with the nurse anesthesia community.

For Sam, the TxANA Convention's value extended far beyond the sessions. He gained hands-on clinical experience, including emergency cricothyroidotomy practice, learned about emerging developments in anesthesia, and heard candid conversations about the profession's future.

The most meaningful part was the community.

From mentors who stayed late to support students they had never met to programs cheering each other on during College Bowl, Sam saw firsthand what makes TxANA special: a profession committed to helping the next generation grow.

As Sam put it, Convention offers SRNAs a chance to see not only how far they still have to go, but also how far they have come and to begin imagining the day they will support the students who follow.

Congratulations, Sam.
