Forager tips:
•Look for split husks. Pecans are ready when their green outer husks split open and the nuts begin to drop. Don’t rely on color alone.

•Beat the squirrels to them. Check productive trees regularly as nuts begin falling. Crows, blue jays, and squirrels can collect a surprising amount of the harvest. 
•Gather from clean ground. Collect fallen pecans promptly, especially after rain, to reduce the chance of deterioration and mold. Avoid nuts that are moldy, damaged, or have been sitting in wet conditions. 
•Dry before storing. Spread freshly gathered pecans in a thin layer on a screen or use a mesh bag in a well-ventilated area. A dry kernel should snap when bent rather than bend like rubber.
