Listen. Hold it. Say it back. Write it down.
In this clip, our client hears a string of sounds from our Phonology: Speech Therapy app, says them back in the exact order, and then writes them.
It looks simple, but it isn't. Holding sounds in order, especially sounds that aren't real words, takes working memory, and that's often the hard part after a stroke.
This kind of sound-sequence practice is at the heart of Phonomotor Treatment, a research-based approach that trains phonemes and phoneme sequences. Repeating nonwords draws on verbal short-term and working memory, which are often impaired in aphasia. In a randomized controlled trial of 58 people with aphasia, those who received Phonomotor Treatment improved their naming of trained words (Kendall et al., 2019).
One more sound, one more rep, one step closer. That's the work at Austin Speech Labs.
