Texans United for Families

Texans United for Families We will support the organizing efforts of detained immigrants and their families.

Permanently closed.

Texans United for Families (TUFF) is a group of community members in Austin, Texas working to end all immigrant detention and demanding the recognition of human dignity for all, regardless of immigration status. We understand our efforts to end immigrant detention as a social justice struggle to combat racialized immigration policy and capitalism, systems which profit from the exploitation of peop

le. We work independently and in coalition with others on campaigns that advocate for an end to detention and deportation through direct action and public education. We work to shut down detention centers, stop deportations, release individuals from detention, and change immigration enforcement policy.

Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying....Corridos have long telegraphed the melancholy of Mexico’s northern frontier. Corridos used to be like newspapers. It is, basically, a musical news story. Heroes die. Lovers are crossed. And bad politicians are elected. Case in point..."La Jaula de Trump".

Please join us in signing the petition to call on Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop the deportation of Hilda Ramirez and her 10 year-old son Ivan. Hilda and Ivan have been in sanctuary in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian church in Austin for more than 3 months. We are joining a month-long campaign of the Austin Sanctuary Network petitioning ICE headquarters in San Antonio to grant Hilda and her son Ivan a stay of removal.

Hilda and her son Ivan came to the United States during the humanitarian crisis in the summer of 2014 fleeing violence and abuse. They both were detained for 11 months in the Karnes County family detention center, a for-profit detention facility, where Hilda participated in a hunger strike so that they could be released from prolonged detention. Hilda continues to fight for her right to remain in the United States and her and Ivan's safety.

We ask you to join the call to by signing the petition: https://grassrootsleadership.ourpowerbase.net/civicrm/petition/sign?sid=31&reset=1&%3Bqid=538242

On February 9th, 2016, Hilda and Ivan took a prophetic and courageous step to enter into Sanctuary at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas. Hilda explains that, "I feel safe here. I don't think immigration agents will break down the door and take me away. That is why I came here."

After failing to secure a contract in one Texas county because of widespread local community opposition, British private prison company Serco is trying instead to negotiate with Duval County to open the family detention center that Jim Wells County rejected. The potential facility is the same aband...
