We’re binging East of Eden, and the abortion story of Florence Pugh’s Cathy reminded us so much of the work we’ve done as a network of abortion funds and the work we still need to do. Abortion funds are on the frontlines for abortion-seekers who face so many obstacles from abortion bans and abusive partners to legislation like the Hyde Amendment that places restrictions on abortion.

Texas funds are currently fighting for Rosie’s Law in honor of Rosie Jimenez, who died from lack of care due to the restrictions of the Hyde Amendment. They pay for abortions, run period and diaper pantries, deliver reproductive health kits, fly patients in ban states to care, and more.

50 years ago, the Hyde Amendment blocked the use of federal funds for most abortions, impacting millions of abortion-seekers who use Medicaid. Communities nationwide said, "F**k that!" and began forming abortion funds in response. Abortion funds are proof of the resilience, rebelliousness, and creativity of our communities. This year marks 50 years of the Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal funding for most abortions. This amendment has left Black, Indigenous, people of color, disabled communities, and more with limited abortion access for 50 years. Abortion funds were started in direct response to the Hyde Amendment and other attempts to control our lives and bodies. Local abortion funds are powered by people who know we have the power to care for each other regardless of abortion bans and restrictions like Hyde.
