In 1965, Filipino farmworkers in Delano walked off the grape fields under the leadership of Larry Itliong. A week later, they invited Cesar Chavez and the Mexican American farmworkers to join them. Together they became the United Farm Workers.

Austin’s mural honoring Larry Itliong has been repainted. At the Itliong family’s direction, the portrait beside him is now Al Rojas, a UFW co-founder and lifelong friend of the family.

On Sunday, October 25, Larry Itliong’s son Johnny and Al Rojas’s daughters Desirée and Debra will stand at that wall and rededicate it.

Free and open to all

The ceremony opens Filipino Young Professionals of Austin, Texas's 5th Annual Filipino Day Market. Come celebrate with us.

On Sunday, October 25, we’re gathering at Austin Beerworks Sprinkle Valley to rededicate the Larry Itliong and Al Rojas mural, in honor of Filipino American History Month. With us will be Johnny Itliong, Larry’s son, and Desirée and Debra Rojas, Al’s daughters, who are traveling from California to be with the Austin community for this occasion.

Larry Itliong organized the 1965 Delano grape strike. Al Rojas was a co-founder of the United Farm Workers. Both spent their lives fighting for people who had no one fighting for them. Both were written out of the history books for far too long.

The ceremony begins at 12:30 PM and is free and open to the public. It takes place during the Filipino Young Professionals of Austin, Texas Filipino Day Market (12–5 PM), so come early, stay for the market, and help us make sure these two men are remembered.
