πŸŽ‰ Happy 2nd Birthday, GreenWave! πŸŒŠπŸ’š

On May 28, 2024, the GreenWave Initiative launched its very first event β€” and in just two years, this movement has grown into a powerful force for environmental action, leadership development, and community impact across Houston.

Built on the success of the Clean & Green program, GreenWave is a community-driven conservation and education initiative led by American YouthWorks - Texas Conservation Corps (TxCC). Through hands-on litter abatement and waterway cleanups, GreenWave brings together paid conservation crews and local volunteers to improve public health, reduce flood hazards, and restore neighborhoods across Houston. GreenWave creates a meaningful impact at every level of the community. Over the past two years, GreenWave has expanded through new partnerships, community support, and collaborations that continue to strengthen our environmental mission.

Thank you to every volunteer, crew member, partner, and supporter who has helped make GreenWave possible. The wave of change is just getting started. πŸŒŽβ™»οΈ

On May 13th, a few of our Houston Conservation Corps staff had the opportunity to attend Confluence at United Way of Greater Houston β€” a powerful gathering focused on the future of green infrastructure, flood resilience, and community-centered environmental planning in Houston. 🌿🌊

From learning about the decades-long planning and implementation behind Exploration Green to hearing directly from the organizations and leaders stewarding these spaces, the symposium highlighted how collaboration across sectors creates lasting environmental impact.

Our team gained valuable insight into:
β€’ Nature-based solutions for flood mitigation and water quality
β€’ Long-term planning and restoration of Houston green spaces
β€’ Community engagement and volunteer-driven conservation efforts
β€’ The importance of partnerships in creating sustainable public spaces

We also connected with passionate advocates, planners, and conservation leaders who opened the door to future educational opportunities and partnerships that could benefit our crews and communities.

A special thank you to Bayou Preservation Association for inviting us and for continuing to support the important work our TxCC crews do throughout the City of Houston. Your partnership helps create opportunities for growth, education, and lasting community impact. πŸ’š

Thank you as well to the organizers, presenters, and panelists who shared their expertise and inspired meaningful conversations about Houston’s environmental future. We’re excited to continue building relationships that support conservation, education, and community resilience across our region.

Join us in congratulating the 2026 Houston GulfCorps Crew graduates! πŸŽ“πŸŒŠ

We are especially proud to celebrate a major milestone!πŸŽ‰ All five crew members achieved All-Star status, marking the first time in TXCC history that an entire crew let alone a single person has earned this recognition. All-Star status represents going above and beyond regular Gulf Corps program requirements through leadership, professionalism, personal growth, and the commitment service. The crew’s willingness to put in the extra effort for both their communities and their own development truly set them apart.

β€œFrom day one to now, this term was full of growth, hard work, and unforgettable moments. The spotlight photos capture just a glimpse of the dedication, resilience, and impact this crew made. Congratulations graduates! We’re proud of everything you accomplished and excited to see where your journeys take you next!” - Angelina (Houston CC Staff) πŸ’šπŸ‘

Halfway there! πŸŽ‰πŸŒŸ
Last week the Houston staff team joined us in Sam Houston National Forest to celebrate the Disaster Recovery Integrated Resource Crew reaching the midpoint of their 1700 termβ€”and to knock out midterm evaluations. Huge thanks to the Forest Service staff who came out and grabbed these group shots with us. ✨

This crew is the first of its kind for us: cross-trained across recreation, heritage, timber, prescribed fire, natural resources and more. They often work in pairs at different host sites, so no two days (or tasks) look exactly the same. So far, that’s meant trail surveys, campground maintenance, timber sale plot monitoring and even red-cockaded woodpecker surveys. What really sets this experience apart: members receive daily supervision, support, and mentorship from both an AYW supervisor and the Forest Serviceβ€”and that dual mentorship is a big part of what draws people to our programs.

Proud of what this team has already logged and excited for what’s next. 🌲πŸ’ͺ
