Useful Wild Plants is a nonprofit based in Austin, TX that is dedicated to creating a comprehensive, interdisciplinary documentation of every plant species found in Texas and promoting holistic sustainability. Founded in 1971, the Useful Wild Plants Project was conceived as a means to conserve the rich legacy of a botanical domain that spans Texas and encompasses the southern two-thirds of the Uni

ted States and the northern third of Mexico. This region is home to a vast and diverse set of vascular plant species that hold thousands of yet unknown applications to food production, medicine, and commodity production. As the only project of its kind world-wide, the Useful Wild Plants Project is currently working to complete a set of encyclopedias and other informational resources that comprehensively present the uses and attributes of these species.

TEXAS MONTHLY PODCAST
State of Mind, Episode 8: Useful Wild Plants

Episode 8 of the new podcast series State of Mind by Texas Monthly writer Katy Vine and podcast producer Patrick Michels went live on August 4th (which coincidentally was declared Useful Wild Plants Day and Scooter Cheatham Day by the City of Austin in 2016).

The podcast captures the “why” of the Useful Wild Plants Project. Katy has expanded her Texas Monthly Live stage presentation on UWP that she did in 2019 in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Brownsville, and San Antonio. It’s pretty darn interesting. You can listen here:

Two Austinites have made it their life’s work to document uses for every wild plant in Texas—a project they say could save humanity.
