If you haven't seen the invites from Church of the Friendly Ghost, they and Collide Arts are working with Marshall Trammel on a project to document water sounds/videos and then present those sounds in installation and performance, all based on community rules for engagement developed at an oil pipeline protest on tribal lands. It's difficult to explain the totality of the project. There is a 2nd information session today Friday at 2pm at Carver Library. Saturday evening/Sunday morning we will meet on Lady Bird Lake to record video. Next Friday and Saturday will be presentation of video along with choir and musicians and you are invited to be a part of it all.

is hosting the first Hear/Do festival, a free end-of-summer gathering at the intersection of sound and science, on Saturday, 8/22 .io from 9:30 AM to 6.

There will be talks by and Colby Cushing, a geophone workshop by , an open call field recording presentation, and lots of social and coffee time.

World Listening Day 2026 is *this* Saturday July 18th!
Listening to 2116 will begin at 5:00 PM in the Underground Rotunda at the Texas State Capitol. This will mark the tenth anniversary of Phonography Austin.

Founded in 2016 to organize Austin's first World Listening Day event, Phonography Austin is dedicated to the exploration of phonography—the creation and presentation of field recordings as artistic works—and acoustic ecology.

Over the past decade, the collective has organized public workshops, listening events, community-based research projects, and annual report compilations documenting Austin's acoustic environment.

We are grateful to everyone who has participated in and supported these efforts over the years.

World Listening Day is an annual international event dedicated to the practice of listening and the study of our acoustic environment.

Observed each year on July 18—the birthday of composer and acoustic ecology pioneer R. Murray Schafer—World Listening Day encourages people around the world to engage critically and creatively with the sounds that shape their communities.

Since 2010, participants across six continents have organized listening walks, field recording projects, educational programs, and public events focused on sound and place.

Phonography Austin is pleased to continue this tradition in Austin through its 2026 World Listening Day program, Listening to 2116. Join us on Saturday July 18, 2026 at the Underground Rotunda of the Texas State Capitol.

We're only a week and a half away from World Listening Day 2026!

Join us on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at the Underground Rotunda of the Texas State Capitol at 5:00 PM for a guided exercise in acoustic ecology hosted by Phonography Austin and

This year's program, Listening to 2116, invites participants to consider how Austin's acoustic environment may evolve over the next century. The event will include a brief introduction to World Listening Day, acoustic ecology, and listening practices, followed by a guided listening exercise and field recording activity.

Participants will then gather at Scholz Garten to discuss observations and recordings collected during the event.

No prior experience with field recording is required.
