The discontinuation of Palforzia marks a complicated moment for the food allergy community.

“Palforzia was the first FDA approved therapeutic to treat any food allergy, marking a shift from avoidance as the only option for kids with a peanut allergy. It was a watershed moment,” Sung Poblete said to Healio.

That’s why this news is so difficult. “Palforzia is one of only two FDA-approved therapeutics for food allergy, so it’s really disappointing to see all the R&D that was put into its development be lost, not to mention the brave patients who participated in the clinical trials to get the drug to approval,” Poblete added.

At the same time, progress is not stopping.

There are still centers offering oral immunotherapy, along with emerging approaches like sublingual and epicutaneous immunotherapy that could expand options in the near future. Research is actively underway, including a FARE-funded study exploring how to safely treat multiple allergens at once.

And this is exactly where continued investment and collaboration matter most. Through initiatives like the Mind Meld Innovation Summit, FARE is bringing together researchers, clinicians, industry, and federal partners to accelerate the next generation of breakthroughs.

Progress in food allergy has never been linear. But even in moments like this, the path forward is clear: more innovation, more access, and a continued commitment to changing what life with food allergy looks like. A restaurant turning people away because of food allergies isn’t just a headline, it’s a reflection of a much bigger issue the food allergy community faces every day.

A burger kitchen in the UK is facing backlash after publicly stating it cannot serve customers with common allergens like gluten, nuts, soy, or sesame due to cross-contact risks in a small kitchen. While the restaurant says this decision is about safety and transparency, many people with food allergies are left feeling excluded from something as basic as dining out.

For the more than 33 million Americans living with food allergies, this is not an isolated experience. It’s a reminder of how limited safe options can be, and how often individuals and families are forced to choose between participating in everyday moments and protecting their health.

We know that preventing cross-contact is complex, but progress means moving toward solutions that make dining out safer and more accessible for everyone. That includes better training, clearer communication, stronger systems, and continued innovation across the food industry.
