A reminder that this could come to a vote tomorrow. Take action now!

Senate Bill 1365 gives "final and unappealable power" to the unelected commissioner of education to override the will of thousands of voters by taking over an elected school board. Public schools should be governed by boards elected in your local community, not a bureaucrat in Austin. Can you send a...

Our national affiliate--AFT--has been taking input, holding town halls and discussing key education issues for almost a year now as it readies itself to make a possible presidential endorsement. While this will not be a scientific poll by any means, we'd like to hear from you now that the field has narrowed. Who would be your picks for a presidential candidate?

TRS retirees...an update! Conferees have now been named for a conference committee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate plans in SB 12 for pension changes. Here are the basic differences:

House: state ups its contribution to fund by 2%, provides a 13th check capped at $2,400 (Cost to state for biennium: $1.3 billion)

Senate: contributions are increased by active employees, districts and the state, with a 13th check capped at $500. (Cost to state for biennium: $555 million)

Neither would provide for a cost-of-living increase at this point, but would make one possible in the near future. Once the conferees agree on final provisions of the bill, it will have to be approved by both the House and Senate and signed into law by the governor. Conferees are the following. If any of these are your rep or senator, please call them and ask them to support the House version of SB 12.

House: Representatives Gret Bonnen (R-Friendswood), Barbara Gervin-Hawkins (D-San Antonio), Jim Murphy (R-Houston), Armando Walle (D-Houston) & John Zerwas (R-Houston)

Senate: Senators Joan Huffman (R-Houston), Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound), Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood), Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham), and Royce West (D-Dallas).

22:1 ALERT! While educators and parents know the value of smaller class sizes, some legislators dismiss it as not a high priority. We are now facing a BAD bill that could be voted on as soon as tomorrow. HB 1133, by Rep. Jonathan Stickland (the only rep that voted against the school finance bill), would use an average of class size across an entire campus in grades K-4--essentially nullifying 22:1. Don't let them get away with this, send your letter now and we'll let you know more ways to take action soon!

SAN ANTONIO ISD ALERT! Your school district may be sending you a letter asking you to sign on as a supporter of laws that would be used to promote teacher pay based on the STAAR test. This is unethical and coercive. For instance, San Antonio ISD is distributing this letter now! (If you are in a dist...
