This Saturday, October 17, we are partnering again with the Texas Ramp Project to complete the ramp that we began in August for a CAPS member in Northeast Travis County. The focus on Saturday will be to install the skirting on the ramp and finish any other details.

You will be joining a wonderful group of volunteers on a beautiful October Saturday! Arrival time is 8:30AM. If you are available to help out, please send an email to [email protected].

Join the CAPS community online this Wednesday afternoon for an informative webinar on diagnostic challenges in neurology and how doctors may use the Syn-One Test, together with clinical assessment, to inform diagnosis. The Syn-One Test uses skin biopsies to detect abnormal synuclein in patients with synuclein-related neurodegenerative diseases. Learn about how skin biopsy may be used to detect synuclein pathology. Sarah Winter, MSW, LICSW, is a clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience in neurological disease-state non-profits as well as movement disorders and oncology clinics. At CND Life Sciences she directs patient engagement and advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the Syn-One Test® and increase patient access to objective diagnostic testing. Sarah has a personal connection to Parkinson’s and a special interest in supporting the growing cohort of those with prodromal Parkinson’s and related disorders.

Capital Area Parkinson's Society is excited to announce our new monthly giving program: The CAPS Catalyst Club! This program was established to provide sustained, predictable giving by a community of donors who believe in the mission of CAPS.

Alison Beck had a storied 50 year career at the University of Texas as the Director of Special Projects at the Briscoe Center for American History. She worked in photographic records and archives with passion for music, dance, and travel.

After retiring in 2024, Alison had plans to travel and spend time with family, which often included physical activities such as hiking and skiing. After feeling fatigued and knowing something was ‘off,’ she sought medical attention. She was referred to a neurologist and eventually was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in December of 2025.

Living independently and by herself, Alison was looking for support, and through an internet search, found CAPS. She’s attended Parkinson’s Connect, the half day seminars, and the monthly education meetings. As a researcher, Alison has soaked up the information presented at the various CAPS programs.

The monthly education meetings (third Thursdays) are the “highlight of my month! It’s an opportunity to learn more about all aspects of Parkinson’s; meeting all these professionals and hearing the latest advances. Knowing that there is some hope out there,” Beck said.

It was at Parkinson’s Connect where she learned the importance of exercise for PD patients.

She had been exercising but ramped it up after hearing a presentation from CAPS. Now she does Body Combat classes, strength training, and yoga. On Saturdays, she does 3 one-hour classes for a full body workout. Then she takes a much needed nap!

“Exercise produces endorphins and I feel just great. Better than if I am just sitting at home.”
