Women's Council of Realtors Austin

The Austin Women's Council of REALTORS ® was started in 1957. Judy Glass was the first President. The 1958 president, Ann Crockett had served as President and Director of the Austin Board of REALTORS® and had attended the National Conventions. Dallas and several other large cities had started local chapters, so she wanted Austin to catch up. Nine members met in homes and invited a loan or title of

Nevenna Travis, Lucille Merschbrock, Thelma Westbrook, Wanda Gantz Terrell, and Dorothy Wallace. All of the original members served as President of the local chapter. In 1957, there were 9 members. In 2025 we had 73 members, and growing! Our local history includes forty-eight local WCR Presidents, and two (Ann Crockett and Wanda Terrell) State WCR Presidents. Over the years, many of our members have served on the WCR State level as committee chairs, district and regional Vice Presidents, Governors, etc. Several have served on the National WCR level as committee members, committee chairs and Governors. Eight of our WCR past presidents have been Chairmen of the Austin Board of REALTORS®. Many WCR members have served as Directors of ABoR. The majority of our members have served in some capacity on ABoR as committee members and chairs. Many local
WCR members have served as Texas Association of REALTORS President. Others have served at the National Association of REALTORS® level as Directors, Committee Chairs, etc. One of the outstanding events in the history of this chapter occurred in the 1970's. There were few real estate textbooks available, so the perceptive and dedicated women in the chapter recognized the need for some kind of guide for ethical and professional real estate conduct. They put together a little book entitled "The Nitty Gritty of Real Estate" or "What Every Real Estate
Licensee Has Always Wanted To Know But Was Afraid To Ask." In 1976, Austin Board of REALTORS® sponsored the project and loaned WCR money to publish the book. It was marketed all over the nation, and was highly successful. Ten thousand copies were printed and sold for $1.25 each. It was agreed that the profits would be used only for the purpose of WCR scholarships. That was the beginning of our Educational Savings Account and our scholarship program.
