AAUW Austin October Branch Meeting

This month, we had the honor of hearing from Kathleen Stafford, who shared her incredible story of resilience and courage during the 1979 Tehran hostage crisis—her first post with the U.S. Foreign Service. After her narrow escape with help from the Canadian embassy and the CIA, Kathleen chose to dedicate her life to her passion for art.

She also showcased some of her stunning artwork and fabrics inspired by her journey. You can explore more of her work at www.kathleen-stafford.com

Thank you to everyone who joined us to discuss state leadership, upcoming elections, public policy, banned books, and our upcoming silent auction.

Our speaker will be Kathleen Stafford. The wife of a U.S. Diplomat, Kathleen will share her harrowing experience in Tehran, Iran, in 1979, which was her first post with the Foreign Service. After their narrow escape from the U.S. embassy, with help from the Canadian embassy staff and the CIA, Kathleen realized how fragile life can be—and decided to pursue her passion for art without delay.

Today, her paintings and collagraphs are part of the permanent collections of many American and foreign embassies, private collections, and art centers worldwide.
