Flu season is upon us, and one of our dedicated providers, Amy McGowan, RN, MSN, FNP-C, is among many who have witnessed firsthand how serious the consequences of the flu can be. Vaccine misinformation can be harmful, and we urge everyone to consult their medical provider about the benefits and risks of vaccines and to seek clarification when things feel confusing. We are continuing to offer free influenza and COVID vaccines to adults in our Hope Clinic community as we approach November. Please refer to our story highlight labeled “Vaccines” for more information.

Hope Clinic is proud to share that we have received the Vaccines Defend What Matters Local Impact Grant award from the Texas Medical Association Foundation. The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests an annual influenza immunization for most adults (aafp.org), and this funding from TMAF has made it possible for us to administer these important immunizations at no cost to any interested adults at our clinic. Thanks to the TMAF, we are able to do our part to “safeguard good health, jobs, schools, and the Texas economy” (texmed.org). TMA says, “The flu virus spreads easily. So don’t put off getting a flu shot. Talk to your doctor today. Vaccines defend what matters.”

A special message from our founder, Gloria McPherson, PA, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month! Hope Clinic is happy to have multiple Spanish-speaking volunteers, staff, and providers, as well as 24/7 online translation services for 300+ languages through Jeenie (Jeenie). We utilize our funds to ensure every patient who walks through our doors is able to properly communicate with us, regardless of where in the world they are from or what language they speak. ¡A celebrar y a disfrutar!

As we head into flu season, Hope Clinic is offering limited influenza and COVID vaccines 💉at no cost to all patients and any family members (18 years+) regardless of health insurance status during our regular clinic hours. Appointments are not necessary; paperwork includes basic questions regarding health status and consent. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) generally recommends an annual flu vaccination to decrease the risk of serious illness and complications of existing medical issues. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions regarding vaccinations and protecting yourself and others from the flu and COVID!

Tomorrow (September 19) will mark another Walk with a Doc! Over the past few months, we have distributed dozens of flyers to our patients inviting them to join our providers, staff, and volunteers on a walk throughout the community with information about the importance of routine exercise—and yes, walking with friends is one of the best forms of exercise there is! This event takes place at 9 am on the third Saturday of each month, and everyone in our community is welcome and encouraged to join. We can’t wait to see you there!

Happy National Day of Encouragement! We are proud to support this day’s message of encouraging mental health mindfulness and creating uplifting and welcoming practices and spaces. One of the ways Hope Clinic does this is by offering limited mental health services for established patients. Our team also recommends Integral Care (Integral Care) for Travis County residents and Bluebonnet Trails Community Services (btcs_health) for Williamson County residents, both of which are government-subsidized centers that provide free and low-cost mental health support, hotline assistance, substance use counseling, and intellectual and developmental disability services. Always remember that a friendly voice will be there for you at 988 in case of a mental health crisis or at 911 in an emergency of any sort.

☀️🚨 To our Hope Clinic community and fellow Texans, please remember to stay cool and safe! Temperatures have exceeded 100 °F multiple times this past week and will continue to stay high throughout August. Please refer to our “Heat Kit” reel, also reposted on our story, for reminders of what to have with you and keep ready on these warm summer days. What to keep in mind: stay hydrated, remain in shady areas, and protect your skin with sunscreen and/or loose-fitting long sleeves.

Know the signs of heat-related illness, too, because you can overheat quicker than you’d think! Heat exhaustion may cause excessive sweating, disorientation, headache, nausea, weakness, and cool/clammy skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and may cause confusion, unconsciousness, seizures, or a very high body temperature.
