Anthropos Arts

Anthropos Arts Helping low-income youth cultivate confidence, integrity, and life skills through FREE music lessons and mentorship since 1998.

What is Anthropos?

• Anthropos Arts is a nonprofit organization that works in East Austin to bring top professional musician-mentors into low-income schools, offering free music lessons, workshops, and performance opportunities to at-risk middle and high school students. The 2013–2014 school year marks our fifteenth year, with well over 10,000 lessons, and more than $1 million in services provide

d at $0 cost to students, families, or schools.
• The diverse mentor-musicians who teach the Anthropos programs are some of Austin’s best performing musicians, doctoral candidates, and professors of music. They are also paid a fair wage for this work. What Do We Do?

• Individualized Lessons with Professional Mentor-Musicians: This is a free program for low-income students in East Austin middle and high schools. Each series of 10–12 lessons is taught in the school by top-notch professional musicians. Students finish the year with a public performance at Stubb’s, where they play and improvise solos alongside their mentors. Program results can be life-changing: In the last 8 years alone, in high schools where the average graduation rate is 60% , we have had 100% of our students graduate; 80% went on to college with scholarship, several of them with ‘full rides’ to study music!
• Music Workshops: Workshops are large-scale introductions to diverse music genres for students in middle and high schools. Workshops can include up to 1000 kids, and they are taught by local stars, or even major touring acts like Grammy-winners Ozomatli, Rebirth Brass Band, et al
• Performance Opportunities: Aside from our annual showcase at Stubb’s, our students also have the opportunity to perform at other seminal Austin venues and even larger public events such as Austin City Limits Festival, SXSW, Pachanga!, and lots more...

“It was an experience I never thought I would experience before—or my family seeing me on stage in a professional setting. I never imagined myself being there.”

That’s what Navarro High School 10th grader and Anthropos All-Stars band member Brandon Juarez shared about the performance opportunities he’s had through Anthropos Arts.

And trust us—he’s only getting started. 🎶

Brandon has said yes to every opportunity that’s come his way and completely run with it. From performing on professional stages to mentoring a middle school student on the oboe, he’s already paying it forward while still writing his own story.

This is why we do what we do. Not just to teach music—but to help students see possibilities for themselves they never thought existed.

Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, one stage, one mentor, one moment that changes everything.

Help us keep that momentum going for more students like Brandon. Hit the link below to support the next generation of young musicians. ✨

Our students had the great honor and pleasure of attending a behind the scenes soundcheck and live concert of Chucho Valdés Oficial and his his all star band at the Paramount Theatre.

The seven time Grammy winner, Latin Songwriters Hall of Famer, and 2025 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master—he's kind of a big deal—was all kinds of incredible and memorable. Our students and mentors got to see a real living legend at work.

Shoutout to Gale Valley from the Paramount Theater for championing our mission and creating these amazing opportunities for our students.

You can keep these once in a lifetime experiences coming with a monthly gift. Hit the link now to get started.

Most people hear the word improvisation and immediately want to disappear into the bushes like the Homer Simpson meme. 🌳

That’s exactly why it’s such a cornerstone of the Anthropos Arts program.

When students step up to solo in front of a live audience, they’re learning so much more than music. They’re building skills that carry far beyond the stage:

😱 Adapting under pressure
📦 Thinking creatively in real time
🕶️ Building confidence and leadership

Improvisation teaches students to trust themselves, take risks, and keep going even when they don’t have all the answers. That kind of growth lasts a lifetime.

And just like improvisation, sustained support makes all the difference. A monthly gift of $25 helps our small-but-mighty nonprofit provide consistent music mentorship and performance opportunities to more students across Austin all year long.

Help us keep the music—and the momentum—going at the link below.

🗣️ We can already hear los gritos as we post this. IYKYK.

"Volver, Volver" a ranchera song made famous by the incomparable Vicente Fernandez in 1973, has been lovingly covered by Los Lobos since the 80's as a tribute to their Mexican roots and heritage.

A lucky group of our students (Brandon Ramirez on percussion, Brandon Juarez on tenor sax, and Juan Reza on trumpet) received the amazing opportunity of performing the Mexican classic alongside the four-time Grammy winners at the iconic Paramount Theatre recently.

🔊 Sound on.
🤠 Cowboy hat in place.
✅ It's time to experience this south of the border banger.

🪗 Viva cumbia!

Just like your tio's brisket, cumbias bring major sabor! They make life worth living.

And we know you're absolutely gonna be living for this cover by our very own Anthropos Arts band from the recent 28th Annual Real World Music Showcase Antone's.

Let the music take you over 🎧.

Keep the cumbias coming with a monthly gift 👉 https://anthroposarts.org/donate/.

Some kids get full arts programs. Some get silence where creativity should be.

In Austin, too many economically disadvantaged students still lack equal access to arts education, mentorship, and creative opportunities.

📊 63% are economically disadvantaged
📊 35.7% are English language learners

The arts impact goes far beyond the stage. According to Texas Cultural Trust arts education helps students build confidence, strengthen academic success, and improves mental health.

That’s why we do what we do. 🎶

Every music lesson, mentorship session, rehearsal, and performance opportunity helps young people discover what’s possible for their future.

Because talent is everywhere, but access isn’t. Join our mission with a monthly donation and help us keep creativity within reach for Austin students.

We're out here feeling like Biggie Smalls.

Was it all a dream 💭? Nope! And we've got the receipts to prove it.

A group of our students were invited to jam with four time Grammy winners and Austin City Limits Hall of Fame inductees, Los Lobos!

Bravo to Brandon Ramirez (percussion), Brandon Juarez (tenor saxophone), and Juan Reza (trumpet) for holding their own among some of the greatest musicians around. Not to mention these kids performed in front of a packed house at the iconic Paramount Theatre. (Still pinching ourselves.)

We would like to thank the following folks for being so incredible and kind to our students.

The whole Los Lobos crew: Louie Perez, Steve Berlin, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, David Hidalgo, the Los Lobos Tour Manager Mando, and Los Lobos Sound Crew.

Local Austin duo, Greyhounds and Gail Valley from the Paramount Theater.

This was truly a beyond awesome experience for our students, and we owe it all to these arts-lovin-community-supportin-cool people. 🤘
