Six Square Austin's Black Cultural District Preserves the rich heritage & cultural contributions of East Austin's historical African American community through social programs and economic dev.

Six Square is the nexus of thriving Black arts and culture in Central East Austin. We re-animate cultural spaces, connect community, and honor the past, present, and future of Austin’s Black Cultural District. We envision a vibrant future for the District that grows from the rich legacy and cultural contributions of Austin’s Black community.

“The District is six square miles of historic geograp

hic sites that we are preserving for future generations. We are creating an incubation space where art and culture can be celebrated and enjoyed and brought to the limelight, not just for the community who lives here, but for all of Austin and Austin’s visitors.” -- James Nortey, Six Square Board member

Austin, this is your final opportunity to take a photo with the iconic BLACK ARTISTS MATTER mural before it is removed from East 11th Street.

For years, this mural has stood as a powerful symbol of culture, creativity, resilience, and the legacy of East Austin’s African American community. It has inspired conversations, celebrated Black artistry, and served as a reminder that Black art, Black stories, and Black voices matter.

Join us after the Juneteenth Parade as we come together one last time to celebrate the art, capture the moment, and honor its impact on our city.

📸 THEN & NOW: The George Washington Carver Complex

For generations, the Carver has served as a center for learning, culture, history, and community in East Austin.

What began as an important resource for Austin’s African American community has grown into one of the city’s most treasured cultural institutions.

Today, the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural & Genealogy Center continues its mission of preserving history, celebrating culture, and inspiring future generations through exhibitions, educational programming, genealogy resources, and community engagement.

As we launch our Then & Now series, we’re honoring the places that helped shape the legacy of Six Square and East Austin.

🏛 Then.
✨ Now.
❤️ Forever a part of our story.

What memories do you have of the Carver? We’d love to hear them.

Why is it called Six Square?

The name comes from the approximately six-square-mile area of East Austin that became the heart of Austin’s African American community.

While the district’s origins are rooted in a painful chapter of segregation through Austin’s 1928 Master Plan, generations of Black Austinites transformed these boundaries into something powerful — building thriving neighborhoods, churches, schools, businesses, music venues, and cultural institutions that shaped the city of Austin for decades to come.

Within Six Square lives the legacy of places like Huston-Tillotson University, Downs Field, Victory Grill, the Carver Complex, Rosewood Park & Rosewood Courts, and countless stories of resilience, excellence, culture, and community.

Today, Six Square continues working to preserve and celebrate the history, voices, and contributions of East Austin’s African American community.

This is more than a district.
This is legacy.
This is community.
