When her husband John experienced a hemorrhagic stroke in December 2023, Nadine Eidman was thrust into a foreign world. Nadine and John experienced on a daily basis the effects and challenges faced by brain injury patients and their families.

That experience inspired Nadine to be a Fundraising Champion for the 2025 Luminary of the Year campaign held by the Brain Injury Association of America's Texas chapter.

"An organization like BIAA can offer valuable tools, resources, knowledge, a playbook - a basic understanding of what you're facing, even just the terminology," she said.

Brain injury is one of the most common threats to Brain Health in the United States and around the world that requires both preventive efforts and robust, long-term support for those affected. Protecting Brain Health both reduces the risk of brain injury across the lifespan and improves outcomes for those affected, including their loved ones, through support for recovery, reintegration, long-term health, and overall quality of life. At the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), we believe that brain injury must be recognized as a central Brain Health issue. "I had the common misconception that strokes only happen to older people," says Maddi Niebanck, who experienced a stroke at the age of 22 due to an arteriovenous malformation.

Strokes in young adults like Maddi are fairly uncommon. However, a 2024 report from the CDC found that the risk of stroke among Americans younger than 65 has increased by approximately 15 percent compared to rates from a decade ago.

While some risk factors for stroke are out of our control, such as a person's s*x, race, or family history, other risk factors can be controlled. Read more: https://bit.ly/3GbYsBb

At 19, Inger Neal was in an accident that caused serious injuries: a broken collarbone, a cracked neck, whiplash - and, unbeknownst to her, a traumatic brain injury.

Despite the severity of her accident, the doctors treating her never diagnosed her with TBI, leaving her without an explanation for the confusion and memory loss that followed. For eleven years, she felt as though something had fundamentally changed inside her, but couldn't figure out what that was.

Everything changed on the day she was sitting in a class for her master's program in rehabilitation counseling. She opened a textbook and saw three words: traumatic brain injury. As she read on, it felt like someone had turned on a light. Read Inger's story, and how the knowledge that she was living with a brain injury transformed her identity, confidence, and purpose: https://bit.ly/4tFyVTq
