The bright yellow color of their wings, ears, and nose comes from a yellow carotenoid pigment called lutein, which is likely attained by the bat’s diet of peeled fig fruits. 🍈

In the field! πŸ” Last month, our team was in the Santa Fe National Forest in northern New Mexico, capturing bats to monitor for the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome. We also trained members of the U.S. Forest Service and their partners in bat-handling techniques so they can continue surveillance in this understudied area.
