It's - and we're always ready to celebrate this incredible tool that makes reading, writing and communication more accessible in the Blind New World. All hail ! 🙌

Hello Allies of the DeafBlind Community,
We’ve emailed this to the DeafBlind community yesterday. We are emailing this news to you, the sighted allies, today. We will also post on Facebook this afternoon.

We have sad news to share. Due to the continuing economic impact on our budget, the Lighthouse’ Board has decided to suspend our DeafBlind Retreat for the year 2026. This is for one year only. We will be back in the year 2027.

Even though this is only a pause, this is still so hard because we know how important DeafBlind Retreats are for our community. This is one of the few times that DeafBlind people can be in charge and lead rather than being led. This is a rich experience for both DeafBlind and abled people alike because it’s a chance to show what the DeafBlind community can accomplish once they work together.

We take comfort in the fact that more DeafBlind-led retreats and camps are popping up all over the world and this practice can continue. We encourage you all to try out the other DeafBlind Retreats offered because we believe that more options are better and we always have something to learn from each other.

Some of you might ask us how you could help or support us. For now, you may share any stories and reasons why this retreat is important to you and email [email protected]. We will forward your message along to the Lighthouse Board.

We’ll reach out again when we are ready to reopen our applications for the 2027 DeafBlind Retreat.

Thank you for your support and understanding,
The DeafBlind Retreat Team

What is White Cane Day?
The President of the United States annually recognizes White Cane Day by the Blind Americans Equality Day Proclamation on October 15th to acknowledge the abilities of people who are blind and to promote equal opportunities as any other American.

Mission of White Cane Day Austin
The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.

Purpose
Each year the Austin community comes together for an event to celebrate this exciting day. And now that we will be doing a live and virtual event simultaneously, it promises to be bigger and better than ever, so tell your friends and come have some fun!
